Riding the start-up wave: Hansaria, John, Virmani (L to R)

Amity Delhi 2011 alumni Abhinav Hansaria, Archit Virmani and Tushar John started up corporate and disputes firm Optimus Legal in Delhi, in May.

The firm, based in Delhi’s Hauz Khas, currently provides corporate commercial dispute resolution and corporate advisory services to companies in the hospitality, health care and real estate sector and has assisted new e-commerce businesses and start-up firms in the hospitality, information technology and media and entertainment sectors with incorporation, legal compliance, general corporate advice including contractual requirements, besides managing their investment portfolio, said John.

Former Lall Lahiri & Salhotra senior associate John is experienced in intellectual property IP) law, media and broadcasting and civil litigation. Former K Datta & Associates associate Hansaria is experienced in company and consumer law and original civil litigation. Former Khaitan Sud & Partners (KSP) associate Virmani, who worked at Pathak & Associates before co-founding Optimus, is experienced in corporate dispute resolution.

The three partners “had a similar vision of testing our independent individual capabilities by taking the plunge into the ever - challenging field of individual legal practice” and “realized that pooling in [their] individual knowledge [and] experience could be fruitful considering all three hail from different fields of law”, explained John.

Currently they have not hired a team of lawyers for Optimus. John said “expansion” by November was planned.

John said that the growth strategy for Optimus currently relied heavily on the heightened tendency of the by DNSUnlocker" class=pcpropnk href="#20942449"> market

to sprout start-up firms, also evident in the careers of several of their own friends who have left lucrative jobs abroad to come back to India and start-up.

“Our primary focus in the initial stage was start-ups as we ourselves had various friends coming up with their own ventures whom we had been advising and assisting. Subsequently, we approached and were invited to network meets and events by our peers and friends in and outside the industry whereby we got the opportunity to interact with other entrepreneurs and investors,” he explained.

“However, our core belief remains on the word-of-mouth model [of business development], as it provides a more hands on view about us and our services from our existing clients which lessens any doubt about our capability.”

Optimus closed its first deal, advising cloud-based hotel solutions provider Djubo on its minority stake sale to online travel services provider Ibibo which was advised by Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan (LKS), said John.
