As NLSIU Bangalore students are due to meet the administration on Sunday about the extension of a campus curfew after an alleged rape in October, the student bar association (SBA) has proposed legal amendments to the Justice Verma Committee on women’s safety.
The SBA will meet the law school’s executive committee members on 13 January to push for a review of the administration’s 13 December decision to impose a 9pm curfew on students and punish violators with suspension from the hostel.
The curfew followed an alleged rape of an NLSIU student two months earlier in the adjoining Jnanabharathi campus after 10 PM.
Sunday’s meeting was fixed after the SBA wrote a letter to NLSIU vice chancellor (VC) Venkat Rao on 17 December, protesting the imposition of the curfew and taking exception to the manner in which it was instated and proposed to be enforced.
The SBA proposed an alternate entry timing of 12:30am, subject to checking of identity cards of the entrants at the gate after 9 PM. It also proposed to restrict exit timings to 10pm.
In its submissions to the Verma committee, the SBA made suggestions for amendments to substantive and procedural criminal law in India.
Its suggestions include changes in the definition of rape, opposition to the punishment of chemical castration and the death penalty to sex offenders, the maintenance of a sex offenders’ register, compensation and financial assistance to rape victims, making marital assault a crime, advocating police, media and medical reforms, and changes to the sentencing policy for sex offences.

Kian, you should cover the NLS Union Debates on your website, there's some excellent stuff coming out of that
You idiot the SBA is the most pro-active, organises good events, does socially relevant work, and is not afraid to take on the admin. In other law schools the student bodies are useless and usually a puppet of the administration.
