New Uber India GC to be Khaitan’s Joyjyoti Misra • Mohit Abraham promoted to Uber California

Khaitan <designation>partner</designation> <lawyername>Joyjyoti Misra </lawyername>likely to take up Uber India GC roleKhaitan partner Joyjyoti Misra likely to take up Uber India GC role

Khaitan & Co partner Joyjyoti Misra will become the new India general counsel (GC) of global taxi 2.0 giant Uber, after the former Uber India GC Mohit Abraham moved to San Francisco in July to become legal director for regulatory and the Americas.

Misra's resigning from the partnership was internally announced at Khaitan today, and according to authoritative sources he will succeed Abraham as Uber's India GC, although no formal announcement has been made.

Misra did not respond to phone calls and messages seeking comment today.

Khaitan HR executive director Amar Sinhji commented on Misra's departure: “Joy has played a good role in the growth of our Delhi offices. He is now choosing to move on to pursue a career and role that he has aspired to and we support him in that pursuit. We wish Joy all the very best in his future professional endeavour.”

The 2005 NUJS Kolkata graduate Misra (the same alma mater and batch as Abraham), had begun his career at begun his career at Luthra & Luthra in Mumbai for four months, moved to Amarchand Mangaldas in 2005, and joined Khaitan in 2010 where he was made partner in 2010.

Abraham had joined Uber in June 2015, also from Khaitan & Co where he was a partner.

We reached out to Abraham for comment last week but have had no response.

In May, Uber's global GC Salle Yoo's role (and/or job title) was changed to chief legal officer, as an increasing number of complex legal issues beset the company that has long prided itself globally on driving rather closely to existing laws and restrictions in the often highly-regulated taxi space.

Why not calling them ex Khaitan? KCO is a brilliant law firm to nurture great talents.

Look at the Indian legal market (law firm & in house) mate. Either Amarchand (and/or NLS crowd) everyway. KCO brilliant, seriously! (had retained them once. BIG mistake).Only marketing gimmicks. Quality of drafting very poor. No core strength. Only undercuts on billing helps them.

Triple Aces would always be CAM, AZB & SAM, and in that order too :-) So live with it, peace out.

Pleasure to have dealt with smartie pants like you!! Don’t worry about Khaitan, there is enough clientele to support its year on year growth. Considering your stuck up attitude that “Amarchand/NLS grads” are cut out for retention, maybe you need to internalise and figure out how to bow before your senior, cut more costs and work harder to be efficient.

P.s. it’s law school for your minions, work harder to make it in life or your company.

'Law School Icon', my 2 cents. The fact you think of 'Axed' as smartie pants, reeks of arrogance & cockiness on your part. Aren't you in the client servicing industry? Its obvious KCo screwed up, hence the BIG mistake reference. I see it as constructive feedback! And no denying you have many exAmarchand crowd, as organically not even worth peanuts mate, and illustrated by no CM practice, till Bhatta and Shroff (unintentional)joined/lur ed...

Thanks for your inputs. Being from the service industry, it’s sad that you don’t understand the difference between constructive feedback and foolish bickering :) bench strength based on one retention :/

On ex CAMites or people from other institutions, definitely they are welcome and there is a reason kco continues to be attractive to them. Similarly many ex KCO are in CAM and doing really well - Atman, Vandana being point in case.

Probably you need to check market data for the CM work done till date - definitely you would have heard about Mr Kulkarni and Mr Bassi.

What about Luthra, JSA and Trilegal? And ALMT, HSA, Indus Law and Samvad? They are all good too.

Hi Axed

Just wanted to point out that "Quality of drafting very poor" is a poorly drafted sentence. As is "Only undercuts on billing helps them".

Can't you get Amarchand to conduct a language skills workshop for you?

By the way, I would love to hear you say "mate" and "peace out" in your Indian accent.

@Kian: dude, can you not do without the voting buttons? On most stories, don't really see how those add to the story or the experience apart from giving some folks some needless fun times.

But he doesn't have any litigation or regulatory experience. That's Uber's main issue at the moment in India I believe.

Litigation he doesn't, regulatory he does actually. Also, shouldn't we let Uber be the judge of who they think fit their bill :)
