The Bar Council of India has started conducting an All India Bar Council Exam (AIBE) since 2010 as part of the reforms in legal education to maintain a good standard of practising in the Bar.
It is now mandatory for all fresh law graduates to pass the AIBE before they can practise in any court or tribunal of India.
For applying for the AIBE, it is mandatory for the candidate to submit a proof of enrolling in his/her State Bar Council (SBC). For the address and contact details of individual SBCs see http://barcouncilmahgoa.org/otherbar.html
The enrolment to the SBC generally requires payment of certain specified fees (which vary from state to state) to the SBC as part of the enrolment fees and payment of Rs. 150 to the All India Bar Council as part of the enrolment procedure.
The enrolment procedure entails submitting the pass certificate issued by the candidate’s university (indicating that the candidate has passed the LLB exam as per requirements) and other documents such as address proof etc. (For example see Bar Council of Maharashtra & Goa enrolment form http://barcouncilmahgoa.org/images/enrollmentform.pdf)
SBCs generally charge a larger amount as enrolment fees if the university from where the candidate has passed the exam is in a state other than the state(s) over which the particular SBC has jurisdiction.
