The development of the administration of justice in Calcutta will be seen to have differed in its origin and early stages considering from that in Bombay (Mumbai). In the case of Bombay the complete sovereignty of the island of Bombay having been transferred by the king of Portugal to the Crown of England under the marriage treaty of 23rd June 1661 on the marriage of his sister the infanta Catherine of Braganza, with Charles II and the complete rights of the island having been sequentially transferred by Charles II. By the charter dated 27th march 1669. To the East India Company, who there under ‘the absolute lords and proprietors of the port and island.’ on paying a rent to the crown of pound 10-0-0 /year.
