AZB & Partners acted for Tata’s subsidiaries Trent and Trent Hypermarket that entered into a joint venture with Anglo-global supermarket retail behemoth Tesco, which drafted in Trilegal.

AZB Mumbai partner Kalpana Merchant acted for Trent.

Trilegal Mumbai partner Sridhar Gorthi acted for Tesco, which is the world’s third-largest supermarket brand, having started originally in the UK.

Tesco and Trent have signed a $140m joint venture agreement and have obtained Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval to enter India’s multi-brand retail market.

Tesco Overseas Investment is buying a 50 per cent equity stake in Trent Hypermarket.

The two companies have been working together for five years, with Tesco having acted as wholesale supplier to Tata’s Star Bazaar and Star Daily-brand supermarkets.

Trent was created in the 1990s as the Tata’s retail arm, and has recently appointed Noel Tata as its chairman.
