This is big! She is one of the most influential people in the world, with millions of Instagram followers and youth ready to mobilise across the world at her call. By attacking capitalism and rejecting COP as a neoliberal greenwashing she is making a bold move but also taking a risk as it could backfire.

Quote:
The 19-year-old Swedish activist has announced that as well as tackling her usual area of climate action and awareness-spreading, she has now thrown her weight behind defeating the West’s “oppressive” capitalist system.
....
“It is a system defined by colonialism, imperialism, oppression and genocide by the so-called global North to accumulate wealth that still shapes our current world order.”
....
Appearing at London’s Royal Festival Hall to launch her new book, The Climate Book, on Sunday night, she decided to venture into political waters in her speech - having previously avoided doing so.
....
“The Cops are mainly used as an opportunity for leaders and people in power to get attention, using many different kinds of greenwashing,” she said.

Is it really that big a deal / piece of news? Isn't most climate activism inherently critical of capitalism, since it argues that unchecked capitalism has caused the climate crisis?
Yes,its a seriously big deal because hope survives for thousands many because one woman choosing to still fight a global war that many have given up on
She is a truly inspirational girl and deserves the Nobel Prize.
1. Greta Thunberg and every other core environmentalist cannot absolutely conform with the process of Conference Of Parties. Why? Because it is inherently structured in a way that would allow the economy to prosper while countries emit GHGs. It basically creates a middle ground for people from both spectrums.
2. The reasoning stated by Greta seems BS because you can't possibly make every country stop emitting GHGs in such a short period of time. It's process, I agree that 2050 as a target might not be the most ambitious one but the efforts are being made by majority of the countries.
3. Talk about overhyping OP. COP is the best possible way that could enable world to counter global warming as a cohesive unit. What do you think would happen if COP gets abolished? Do you think that voters struggling to make an ends meet give a sh*t about global warming, ig not. It would result in a world with no accountability of local leaders.
Most of global warming is not because of people struggling to make ends meet, but because of the greed of plutocrats.
You didn't get the point. I referred to those class of people to elaborate on the point that the majority of people votes for the betterment of 'their' lives, and if there isn't a global body that keeps all the commitments made by a country in check then it'll never be attained because the local leaders elected could care less. It's more like a top to bottom approach.
The top down model or trickle down theory hasn't worked in any part of the world.
