Men and women used to hunt. They used to work days and nights in fields to provide for their families. They would go to war to protect their loved ones. They would take on authoritarian regimes without fear of imprisonment or death.
Now all we do is whine as we work sitting in our air conditioned offices/ homes and eat food from across the world that’s delivered to our doorstep. Now we compare ourselves to slaves and Holocaust survivors because we don’t get to stop working at 5 pm exactly. Now we engage in meaningless culture wars and draw our identity from being contrarian. We proudly proclaim that we have no empathy for farmers. We demand beats headphones as if they were fundamental rights while ignoring entire swathes of the country that even political leaders can’t go into because we’ve stopped being a democracy. Now we define our value by the kind of clothes we wear and the amount of money we have saved and the places we go to vacation. We obsess and obsess about how to screw our coworkers instead of obsessing about how to add value to society or how to help those who need our help.
When did we all collectively lose our spines and lose all sense of perspective? I don’t even think most people who post on this website can claim to be a part of any community let alone a citizen of the country.
Forget community- what happened to ambition? What happened to wanting to reach the pinnacle of your profession? What happened to being so competitive we would itch to be the best at whatever it is we do? Why are we so content with just - floating along? What happened to our legacy drive?
I’m really asking. What happened to turn us into this?
