I keep making errors such as formatting, spelling etc. Basically, I keep finding new ways to make errors and kick myself every time. It gets a little demoralizing when you work so hard on a draft but miss a small detail.

Is there a way to avoid these. Does it happen a lot to people?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
It does happen initially, but with time you improve. Take a print and read documents thoroughly twice or thrice. When you will keep reading alot, you will catch these mistakes quick. Good luck, don't be disheartened but work towards it.
