GLC Kerala may lose 5 year LLB course permit from BCI as govt, HC mull fate of current students

GLC Ernakuklam’s five year LLB program is under threat of de-recognition by the Bar Council of India (BCI), following the BCI’s Right to Information (RTI) revelation that the University Grants Commission (UGC) doesn’t recognise the degree, reported the New Indian Express.

The BCI has asked GLC to show cause why it should be allowed to continue the 5-year LLB degree, styled as the “BA (Criminology)” at GLC, since it was not a UGC-recognised nomenclature.

According to GLC’s website, the 5 year LLB degree course was started at the law school in 2011. Therefore the first batch of students, which the New Indian Express reported are 400 in number, will graduate this year.

GLC Ernakulam is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University, which offers the BA (Criminology) course in six other colleges as well where more than 1000 students are pursuing this degree.

A GLC student challenged the BCI’s show cause notice in the Kerala high court, which has issued notices to the BCI and to Mahatma Gandhi University, reported The Hindu.

The state government told the New Indian Express that it will meet the “Bar Council Association Members” today to discuss the controversy, “will wait for the Bar Council’s stand on the matter” and will then “proceed legally”.

“The government will not allow the efforts put in by the students to go waste,” cabinet minister AK Balan told the paper.
