Delhi T20 cricket cup takes off: 13 matches with Trilegal, Saikrishna strong as champs Titus best Amarchand

The annual Delhi Twenty20 Westlaw-SILF law firm cricket tournament has had a spectacular start in Delhi this month with Trilegal and Saikrishna & Associates showing a definite lead in the points tally after the completion of 13 exciting intra-pool matches played over the last two weekends.This year’s championship will see 20 law firms split into four pools fighting it out to seize the coveted trophy from Titus & Co, which has now won for two years in a row.

The matches commenced on 5 November 2011 after the unveiling of a trophy on 23 October by ex-India national cricketer Ajay Jadeja at Delhi’s Hotel Le Meridian. Up Until now Pool A, B and C teams of five law firms each have already finished four league matches each with only a single match having taken place between two teams of Pool D.

Adding to the excitement and fun this year is a hike in the number of participating teams from four per pool last year to five in various pools. Each team will get a minimum of 4 league and 1 knock-out matches this time.

The beginning of the series on 5 November saw Trilegal in good form facing off against Suri & Co, scoring an unbeatable 206 for 3 on day one. Suri & Co was all out at 144 as Trilegal won by 62 runs with man of the match being awarded to Ashish Bhan for making 107 runs.

Match two of the tournament was played between Luthra & Luthra against Singh & Associates. Singh & Associates decided to bowl first and confined Luthra’s score to 161 for 6 in 20 overs, despite which Luthra thrashed its opponents by bowling out them out at 104 runs. Luthra player Hitesh Tara was declared man of the match that his team won by 57 runs.

Four matches at two different venues were up for a headstart on super Sunday, 6 November, as S&R Associates took on Amarchand Mangaldas, Dua Associates played against Saikrishna while Zeus Law faced Desai & Diwanji and Westlaw’s team clashed against Khaitan & Co.

After scoring 194 in 20 overs at the loss of 4 wickets Amarchand Mangaldas convincingly defeated S&R Associates that could manage only 97 for 9 in 20 overs. Prashant won the man of the match for making 80 runs.

The next match between Dua Associates and Saikrishna was won by Saikrishna was closely fought as Dua’s decision to field first proved unlucky. Saikrishna made 127 in 20 overs that rivals Dua almost matched after scoring 120 for 9 at the end of 20 overs. Man of the match was Dilpreet from Saikrishna.

In the other two matches Khaitan & Co won against Westlaw by 4 wickets with a score of 102/6 in 19.5 overs and Zeus Law defeated Desai & Diwanji after having successfully chased a target of 110 runs. Westlaw was run out for 99 runs in 19.5 overs. Rajeev from Khaitan and Sonam Sharma from Zeus were declared man of the match.

The weekend of 12 and 13 November saw a total of seven nail-biting finishes. The matches held were - AZB vs Karanjawala, Trilegal vs Lakshmikumaran, Suri & Co vs Singh & Co, S&R Associates vs Saikrishna, Desai Diwanji vs Hemant Sahai, Zeus Law vs Westlaw and Amarchand vs Titus

Karanjawala defeated AZB after choosing to bat first and scored 136 for 6 with AZB putting up a good show by managing to chase 131 runs failing to attain the winning total only by 6 runs. Trilegal emerged victorious in its second league match, this time against Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan that failed to notch up a total of 127 runs target set by Trilegal.

Singh & Associates succumbed at the hands of Suri & Co which won by 3 wickets with a score of 121 for 7 wickets in 16.5 overs as Saikrishna had a sensational 10 wickets victory against S&R Associates on 13 November.

In the other matches, Desai & Diwanji put up a tough total of 135 that Hemant Sahai failed to chase and were all out at 108 runs; and finally, Westlaw mauled opponents Zeus Law with a score of 137 in 20 overs, Zeus was run out at 77 runs in 19.1 overs.

Last weekend’s final match between Titus & Co and Amarchand Mangaldas gave a good headstart to the defending champions. Titus won by just 5 runs with Amarchand not relenting easily and giving a tight fight by scoring 147 runs with 7 wickets in 20 overs in reply to Titus’s acore of 152 for 7 wickets. Aditya Kumar from Titus lifted the Man of the match title for scoring 44 runs.

Trilegal, Suri & Co, Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan, Luthra & Luthra and Singh & Co.

Pool B Teams:

S&R Associates, Amarchand Mangaldas, Sai Krishna, Dua Associates and Titus & Co.

Pool C Teams:

Zeus Law, Desai and Dewanji, Westlaw, Khaitan & Co and Hemant Sahai Associates

Pool D Teams:

AZB & Partners, Lall and Sethi, Karanjawala, Zeus IP and TBD (To be decided)
