Nalsar Hyderabad students are being tested for the swine influenza virus at the city’s Gandhi Medical College and Hospital after one student at the law school tested positive for the deadly virus.
Nalsar vice chancellor Faizan Mustafa told Legally India that yesterday night he ordered everyone on campus to be tested for the swine flu virus, starting with students who currently have a cold, fever or any other such condition.
He said that one student, a girl in Nalsar’s first year, had not been finally diagnosed with swine flu but had tested positive in her preliminary medical reports. She left the campus four days ago to be with her parents in Bangalore.
He also said that tests had only begun on campus today and that it would take 48 hours for preliminary medical reports of the tests to be made available, so there have been no results of campus tests yet.
He said that he had also confirmed with the chief medical officer of Shamirpet that there had been no Swine Flu deaths in the nearby Shamirpet village.
The Telangana death toll to the virus has risen to around 26 since December, with two having died in the last 48 hours in Hyderabad, reported The Hindu.
NLSIU Bangalore was shut for 10 days in 2009 as a precautionary measure after an outbreak in Karnataka.
The mortality rates in the highly infectious swine flu virus has increased up to 23 per cent, according to a Times of India report from 2013, though the elderly, young and those who don’t receive prompt medical care are at the highest risk.
Update 5:29pm: Nalsar final year student Aymen has confirmed that nobody on campus tested positive for Swine Flu today. The government health team has checked everyone who showed symptoms and will be visiting again to test everyone else. The first year student from Bangalore whose preliminary report indicated the flu has finally been diagnosed only with viral and not the swine flu.
