Kochhar & Co Chennai litigation head and senior equity-sharing partner J Sivanandaraaj is going independent with his team of 15 lawyers, after having merged his Madras high court practice with the firm over three years ago.
Sivanandaraaj told Legally India he had been running his litigation firm J Sivanandaraaj & Partners for 15 years now including the last three years when he was running it in parallel to Kochhar’s Chennai office.
He said: “All the major law firms send their work to me. I had been taking over work from Amarchand, AZB [and other big firms] but because of this arrangement [with Kochhar & Co] they had stopped sending their work to me. Now I will once again start working with them.”
He said that Kochhar would continue referring matters of its Chennai clients to him.
Sivanandaraaj had joined Kochhar’s Chennai office of 36 lawyers and six other partners in November 2010 to head up the litigation practice of the firm as an equity partner. The NLSIU Bangalore alum had started his independent practice three years after graduation.
In January, Juris Corp Chennai head and partner Hufriz Wadia had joined Kochhar & Co in Chennai as a partner.
Kochhar managing partner Rohit Kochhar did not respond to an email seeking comment.

if big ones have arguing associates, why they engage Sr Advocates in each matter.
What that means in reality I'm not sure - most people don't know, I think - but it's probably some eat-what-you-kill-type model plus fixed salary-type component...
As Sidhu-ji would put it.. Tho-ko Tho-Ko!
No experienced AMSS person will ever join Ro Ko. The persons who were fired from AMSS joined Ro Ko. Otherwise why on this earth anybody will join Ro Ko????
Immature analysis ! if someone has worked with AM and is "fired" he has "experience" with AM before being fired and could join any other law firm or corporate. Looks like you should be fired if you are working with AM with such intellect !!
