NLU Delhi wins funding for Man Lachs world rounds as Chinese organiser opens participation

MPL 5: Where Indian mooting matters
MPL 5: Where Indian mooting matters

NLU Delhi beat Nuals Kochi to win the India funding rounds to compete at this year’s Manfred Lachs world rounds in Beijing on 22 May, alongside any number of teams from India and the world over who choose to participate at the world rounds.

Nuals Kochi’s best speaker citation helped it collect the most points this weekend at the Herbert Smith Freehills sponsored Mooting premier league (MPL) season 5.

The China University of Political Science and Law, which is organizing the international rounds this year, does not have a team cap. So while until last year a total of around eight teams were allowed to represent India based on their memorial marks, this year there is no such limit.

NLU Delhi will be the only law school funded by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) which organises the funding rounds for the moot each year at NLSIU Bangalore.

Delhi’s Somil Kumar, Linesh Lalwani and Arshu John, all in their fourth year of law school, led the law school to victory. Kumar, who was a Henry Dunant semi-finalist two years ago, said: “While the Indian rounds give more weightage to content, at the international rounds presentation matters more. Not that they disregard the law but even if you have better arguments, even you cite more authorities, your [court] manners and style of speaking [will earn you more brownie points].”

NLSIU Bangalore, which won Lachs last year, did not win any award at the funding rounds this year.
