Vaishali Sharma, the Khaitan & Co lateral partner who left the firm last week, has now hired three associates and won her first instructions, she told Legally India.
Her new start-up, which is called Agram Legal Consultants, has already been operating out of a business centre in Lower Parel’s Indiabulls Centre, Tower 2A for the past week.
The office, which she decorated and customised to her needs, has space for six associates; she has already hired three associates and would be interviewing a fourth today, Sharma said.
“Of course very competitive, there are law firms coming up every day,” she admitted, but said that if you focus on “quality” you can still have success in the market.
She told Legally India that she had already started working on “a few” mandates, and has had meetings with a number of clients and potential clients, though she could not share their names yet and did not target any specific sector or geographies.
“I’m open to everyone and anyone, as long as I can give them good services and they’re happy with me,” she said, and added that despite some rumours, she was not planning to tie up with any foreign firms or others exclusively.
Sharma, who specialises in general corporate and competition law advisory, and transactional corporate and private equity, said that she – despite having been approached – was not interested in partnering up initially with anyone else to start Agram, though she did not preclude other partners coming on board in future.
“I am not looking at 2 years, 3 years, how it will be,” she explained about her lack of a concrete roadmap for the future. “As long as i make a good beginning, you never know… Right now I’m more looking at getting my feet in, and getting where I want to be, in 4 years, 5 years.”
The name of the firm, Agram, came from the Sanskrit word Agra, which has a variety of meanings, including “origin, sun’s amplitude, sharpness, apex, ahead of others, summit, to be at the top” and others, explained Sharma.

Agreed? :)
Kian- Maybe you should have a BEST LOGO Contest.
all others are just the leaves!
Completely off topic, but if you've come across any nice law firm logos, do share. (you can include an image in your post by clicking the image button in the comments box and putting the URL to the actual image in it).
And feel free to vote your favourite law firm logo comment up. :)
JSA is neat, uncluttered and has a fresh look.
AZB is the worst. The banyan tree and the font don't get along together. the background colour (blue with beige) is not soothing to the eye nor attractive.
Luthra & AMSS are boring. I don't think their logo will ever have a recall value.
Yes because i go to a firm PURELY because of its logo right?
As does Indus Law....
PXV?
Can someone help in putting them up?
you are right. Khaitan's logo is very similar to GT's. Looks like the designer was feeling lazy on that day.
Quoting yo yo:
hey ho ho..nice to hear from you...keep on guessing!
by far the best! Colourfull and not drab
Quoting Grant Thornton LLP:
not bad...with 4 bottle of vodka BP, GT and Kahitan all look same!!
a leaf out of here
Wise people take wise decisions, like how you did :)
Quoting AM:
Interesting that not a single associate moved with her from AZB to KcO or from KCo to her new start up. Just saying.... I would worry too if my Boss had no 2-3 year plan. Salaries, rent ...meetings with potential clients doesn't quite cut it in a not so great market.
Quoting K Law:
Just as one word can have many different meanings, people can have many different opinions on the future of any new venture. " From small beginnings come great things"
Agram is a positive word, the New Beginning is starting with positive and pure energy.
Who are we to predict the future success of any entity.
Vaishali dont worry of people's view. Just do the hard work.Things will automatically get open up and take you ahead. All the best.
Gandalf you mean, oh learned one!
