Former AZB & Partners senior associate, Souvik Ganguly, who founded start-up law firm Acuity Law, as reported by Legally India in February 2012, has joined BMR Legal as a partner.
BMR Legal, which is the legal arm of consultancy firm BMR Advisors, will open in Mumbai through the merger.
Acuity’s office of six lawyers is currently based in the Bandra Kurla Complex but will be moving to Parel into a new office.
Ganguly told Legally India that it was a meeting of minds, between him and BMR, since they had the same vision of “professional management and a pan India presence”.
He confirmed that he would be joining BMR Legal as an equity partner.
BMR Legal’s Delhi-based managing partner Mukesh Butani said in a statement: “Since inception, the firm has grown in its chosen areas of practice comprising of tax disputes and corporate M&A/private equity.
“Induction of Souvik marks a significant milestone in the firm’s geographic expansion to serve client needs in the M&A and Private Equity space.”
Ganguly was AZB Mumbai between 2005 and 2010, and then joined HSA briefly as a partner before going independent. He is dual qualified in England and India, having graduated from Delhi University’s faculty of law in 2001.
At the start of his career he had briefly worked at Anderson Legal – the legal services arm of now-defunct global accountancy and consulting giant Anderson Consulting – that later turned in DSK Legal.
Indian consultancy BMR has been aggressively expanding into the legal transactional space, having hired M&A partner Amit Khansaheb from Desai & Diwanji in early 2013 for its Delhi office.

(a) "who have not been able to climb up the ladder in a big firm..." the evidence is thin on the ground... most people who started firms are ones were doing generally well in their older firms...
(b) "gather a few clients as a bargaining chip"- knowing nothing about Acuity's practice, how do you even know that?
(c) "alliance of sorts"- well he says he is an equity partner... so if someone from Desai Dewanji leaves and joins its fine, but someone from a start-up becomes an alliance of sorts...
"generality aside, all kudos to Souvik for he has indeed strived hard to reach where he is today and it takes hard work to get here..."
I know Souvik and have worked with him on several transactions... and he is one fine M&A lawyer.. thats beyond doubt... Cheers!!!
Let the game begin now!!
