Eight scholars supported by the Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education (IDIA) initiative secured seats in six national law universities (NLU) after making it past the cut-off for the first university allotment list of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2013.
IDIA prepared a batch of 39 scholars from all over India this year.
Priyanka Hazarika (All India rank (AIR) 3,458), Keshavan Madhaiyan (AIR 4,030) and Ramesh Kumar Solanki (AIR) 4,373 made it to NUJS Kolkata.
Visually impaired scholars Sayantan Adhya (AIR 11,268) and Botta Venkateshwar Rao (AIR 12,578) secured seats at RMLNLU Lucknow.
Madan P (AIR 470), Sarwar Ali (AIR 646) and Shinto Abraham Mathews (503) were respectively allotted HNLU Raipur, NLUO Cuttack and CNLU Patna.
Hazarika and Solanki also made it past NLU Delhi’s cut-off on 16 May after obtaining ranks 30 and 32 respectively, and were promised a full fee waiver by the law school.
IDIA claimed that another scholar Vinatholi Yeptho was entitled to an NLU seat under the reserved category but was wrongly not allotted any by the CLAT convenor. It plans to file a writ for the seat.
Mathews, who was allotted CNLU, alleged that for him and four other CLAT candidates, the convenor HNLU Raipur had failed to record his preference for Nuals Kochi over CNLU, which was listed next to NUALS in the CLAT form. Mathews and IDIA’s Kerala chapter will also file a writ in the Kerala HC to force HNLU to take corrective action.
IDIA selects and supports underprivileged senior secondary students from diverse sections of the Indian society to enable them to take the CLAT and a law degree from India’s premiere law colleges. The non-profit organisation faces a funding gap of close to Rs 1 crore each year.
