NUJS teacher allegedly slaps student late for exam; Law school to inquire

NUJS to inquire into alleged slapping
NUJS to inquire into alleged slapping

An NUJS Kolkata student was allegedly physically assaulted on Tuesday by a faculty member at the law school after the student argued for permission to write an exam despite arriving late to the exam hall.

According to accounts from two students amongst the 100 in the exam hall at the time, the alleged victim was physically dragged out of the exam room by the arm and “slapped repeatedly”.

NUJS vice chancellor Ishwara Bhatt commented that the student was allowed to take the exam after the alleged incident. “It is an internal matter […]. Disciplinary action will be taken [against the parties involved] on the basis of inquiry. The process has started. I cannot say […] in clear terms because [the inquiry] is yet to start. [The inquiry] will be done in a formal manner; there won’t be any suppression or anything.”

Bhatt told Legally India that neither the student nor the university would file a criminal complaint against the faculty.

The concerned student and the accused faculty declined to comment.

NUJS had appointed a student psychotherapist to help students of the law school cope with pressure in September 2012, after the death of a final year student of the college in what was presumed suicide at the time.
