An NUJS Kolkata student was allegedly physically assaulted on Tuesday by a faculty member at the law school after the student argued for permission to write an exam despite arriving late to the exam hall.
According to accounts from two students amongst the 100 in the exam hall at the time, the alleged victim was physically dragged out of the exam room by the arm and “slapped repeatedly”.
NUJS vice chancellor Ishwara Bhatt commented that the student was allowed to take the exam after the alleged incident. “It is an internal matter […]. Disciplinary action will be taken [against the parties involved] on the basis of inquiry. The process has started. I cannot say […] in clear terms because [the inquiry] is yet to start. [The inquiry] will be done in a formal manner; there won’t be any suppression or anything.”
Bhatt told Legally India that neither the student nor the university would file a criminal complaint against the faculty.
The concerned student and the accused faculty declined to comment.
NUJS had appointed a student psychotherapist to help students of the law school cope with pressure in September 2012, after the death of a final year student of the college in what was presumed suicide at the time.

Please do let this comment get posted, LI.
Unless the lack of concerned faculty results in such improper usage
P.S: Kian, in all fairness, i hope you realise that oblique references to irrelevant incidents (psychotherapy and suicides) dilute the credibility of an otherwise incisive piece of journalism. I hope you will continue to ensure adequate follow-up publicity with a view to promote a just and transparent inquiry into this matter.
the fact that she was allowed to give the paper by the admin should be sufficient to decimate your idle armchair conjecture about the regulation?
spare a thought for the poor girl who got (wo)man-handled before the entire student body giving the exam.
slapped. thrice. on the face.
Let not the university protect the party .. Even Alumni should step in and protect student rights ..
This is not a joke .. 23 24 year old kids getting slapped can have serious psychological repucussions .. Be very careful .. Treat this delicately with caution
Indeed, regulations must be enforced strictly but resorting to such methods is like using a jackhammer to drill a 1/2 inch hole in a glass pane.
The disturbing part about the entire incident was that none of the faculty members or college admin condemn the incident and the authorities did not consider the matter serious enough and laughed it off when students first complained.
P.S.: all the guys who are hooting for the student can buck my sall two times each..
Peace out..
Are you serious?
Quoting Times New Indian:
I believe you meant "Why so Serious"?
Who will investigate this matter ? Why the same slap was not given to the stident? What was the benefit the Faculty Member get from the said student ?

Let us be very clear. We will not let this incident die down. If there is any hint of a cover up, any hint.. there will be very serious fallout.. Nobody is allowed to take the law in their own hands.
let all parties sort the problem out legally. Teacher must be brought to task and apology must be given publicly and with humility. Else teacher must be dismissed. Please know that we have people within the system who will let us know exactly what is going on.
Let this matter be solved peacefully before it blows into something that no wants. Solve this amicably while you still can.
The teacher if she was of the opinion that there was a breach of regulations should have informed the VC or Registrar ( I guess these guys exist for a reason) who would then make the determination regarding the regulations and may choose to evict the student.
Exam Invigilator is not authorised to use physical force in any event.
NUJS has enough ex-military security guards to follow the instructions of the Registrar, if needed.
only if a pharmacist had made a suitable intervention before you were born.
Quoting heat seeker:
Do remember that for the smallest of transgressions of the students, the admin was prompt to dole out suspensions! This is a criminal use of force by a representative of the university and should be dealt with seriously. The University's reputation is at stake here. Seriously, if this is the attitude of the teacher, how can one even have a healthy academic discussion with her without being mortally afraid? Do you think that the students who are witnesses would come forward if this person is allowed to continue. Even the 5th years are scared because this teacher has flunked a lot of them and they have repeat papers.
SJA.. stand up for the students who have elected you... Show them that the students will not be trampled upon..
History is on your side... Fear Not, we have seen such struggles.. we have fought tooth and nail... we have been victorious...
We are with you...
Do remember that this event happened on the last day of college, when almost 80% of the college already left. its difficult to organise a protest when the students are spread over the country. There will definitely be a protest as soon as everybody is back
There was never a conscious student body. All independent minds have been supressed... All students are slaves to their academic masters..
SJA needs warriors .... Soldiers of Menon as there once existed in that college... The glorious days when justice was dispensed without fear. Where the black hand of the Reign ruled the walls...
The place needs a cleansing, a clinical revolution ... A movement that will instill pride in every student ....
The Shield has seen this... The Shield is with you... Arise.. Awake...
Stop not till you are free of your shackles...
The Shield appears when there is a disturbance in the force.. and disappears when the crease is lifted..

SJA in NUJS is a big joke. It just knows how to launder money. Its totally defunct! Not ONE general body meeting has been held in the last THREE years!
Please know your facts before making such comments. there is a difference between the SJA and the Adminstration. the SJA is a student run organisation merely for running the societies, it does NOT make any money. So, your "money laundering" comment falls. Moreover, there were two GB meetings last year. :)
Quoting AnotherstudentofNUJS:
I think you confused the Annual Day celebrations and Invicta opening ceremony with the TWO GB meetings. And if SJA doesnt deal with money then how come it allocates funds to the various committees and societies?
AS always , the shadow sees all... the shadow is waiting..
This is of course a serious matter for the teacher and students of NUJS. But how does this concern other law students or colleges? Does it reveal any particular trend? Does it highlight any over arching issue? This news is highlighted only to sensationalise. Clearly, some disgruntled NUJS students thought this is a good way to get back at the teacher - while the poor student is a scapegoat.
And then LI milks it by linking the suicide story and making it seem like NUJS is a breeding ground for all such issues!! Shame on you LI! SHAME!
As for [...], time for him to leave. Things are going from bad to worse.
Actually Aj is a complete name in itself
it really does matter, the message which is sent out
would be it be just for a teacher to resort to physical violence if they have a reason to it justify it later on?
i hope not and believe most of the people here would agree.
moreover, this incident, justifies the need as to why the faculty should undergo a mandatory psychiatric evaluation from time to time.
HAD IT ONLY BEEN JADAVPUR UNI... we would have had reasons to sympathize with the faculty concerned by now
Talk about violence on women!.. this country in general needs a serious shaking up man/ woman or chhaka..
Not allowing a student in because she was late is nothing short of stupid.
Ever thought of reason behind such a practice? Because there are enough geniuses who might do that intentionally in order to get the hint of questions, considering you are allowed to leave after first fifteen minutes.
This is something only NUJS and NLS can boast of: a liberal culture, an empowered student body.
A liberal culture which actually promotes and doesn't hinder student's dealing proactively with the admin. And an empowered student body which is powerful enough to take such an action against the university.
such a troll you are.
Empowered student body? I am from NUJS and the student body is doing nothing here. Everyone is busy getting on with their own lives. What liberalism? What empowerment? Please stop all this chest-beating on public forums while the foundations of a university rot. Hubris is not going to get us anywhere as long as we don't want to look at status quo in its entirety. Adn BTW your attempt to exclude Nalsar from the list of liberal, empowered campuses smacks of despicable opportunism.
A person got attacked by one of their own. This is a serious issue and something should be done about it!
Even though she has been one of the best faculties in college, I reiterate, nothing gives her right to behave in such manner.
If you think she is a "brilliant teacher" I suggest you choose an alternate profession before its too late
Sincerely
Bleh
You wouldn't know if you sleep through her lectures.
Sincerely
Double bleh
He shall not be allowed to thwart the forces who support the benefit of good, hardworking students who are attacked by the institution.. Justice will prevail
Arise...
At least let us know why you are not publishing the name.
The link at the bottom was not to a story about a suicide but to a story about a counselor being introduced on campus to help students deal with excessive academic pressure or stress.
As such, it is related to the culture of a college and the initiatives the administration has taken.
In terms of reporting without naming names: we thought the most important part of the story would stand just as well without any names.
Also, Until there has been a bit more time for facts to crystallise (re a formal inquiry), for the college to take action, if any, etc, we figured it more important to publish the events themselves, rather than naming and shaming individuals on either side.
Best wishes,
Prachi
Quoting Prachishrivastava:
also, there could be other angles to the story (faculty having political connections etc) so that enquiry is hushed down.
All we know as of now is that if the SJA and the students do not take action as required, these things will happen again. The next time it will be more serious. The mentality of the faculty from the very beginning in NUJS has been to get after the students and constrict them. There are enough instance of these on record.
The watch is being kept. We are getting our reports internally from the system. We will make suitable intervention if required including naming and shaming in public fora...
Shows that intimidation has already happened....
Bhatt has to reply more to the Nation
As for those wishing to know the prof's name, go to nujs.edu, click on "Faculty", and spot the person with the least impressive qualifications.
more clues please... not able to figure
And what's with linking this incident with the suicide? This is an obvious slide into yellow journalism. Try and find better stories.
maybe, you are a faculty troll.... in which case, suitable intervention will be made...
if elder sisters start slapping the lights out of their siblings, young lings have ,much to fear..
Bullshit.. "maternal instincts".. more like caveman instincts.
