NLUO gets NLSIU registrar Nagaraj as new VC

Nagaraj: makes VC debut
Nagaraj: makes VC debut

NLSIU Bangalore’s registrar of four years Prof V Nagaraj was today appointed as the new vice-chancellor (VC) of NLU Orissa (NLUO) Cuttack.

Nagaraj told Legally India that the High Court of Orissa’s order appointing him as the VC is yet to reach him, though it has been verbally communicated to him. He said that his exact date of joining Orissa will be decided after the appointment of a new registrar at NLSIU.

At NLSIU, the new registrar will be “someone [internally] selected by the vice chancellor, [from among faculty] at professor level [designation]”, explained Nagaraj.

Nagaraj who graduated with an LLB from Dharwad University in 1987, holds an LLM from Gulbarga University, an MPhil from Bangalore University and a PhD from Mysore University.

He joined NLSIU Bangalore in 1990, and was appointed assistant professor of law here in 1992, associate professor of law in 1997, additional professor of law in 2000 and as a professor of law in 2006.

He was appointed as the registrar of the law school on 1 September 2008.

Nagaraj specialises in labour law, contract law, legal methods, insurance law, arbitration law, alternate dispute resolution and clinical legal education, according to NLSIU’s website.

He was selected for the post from a shortlist of five, as reported by Legally India on Friday. The other incumbents were NLSIU professor Prof TV Subba Rao, Delhi University dean Prof Gurdip Singh and HOD BK Raina, and Banaras Hindu University professor Prof D Verma.

In its fifth year since the first admissions, NLUO is seeing its third VC, after the first two resigned mid-tenure. Outgoing VC Chandra Krishnamurthy resigned in less than eight months to head up Pondicherry University, while NLUO’s first VC Faizan Mustafa resigned to head up Nalsar.

Krishnamurthy’s exit created an empty chair at the institute for some time as the nomination of a VC search committee was belated.
