Breaking: Senior advocate Ashwani Kumar, the minister of state for parliamentary affairs and planning, will be minister of law and justice, after Salman Khursheed was elevated to head up the foreign affairs ministry in today’s Congress cabinet reshuffle.
Kumar gained his LLB from Delhi University’s law faculty and completed a doctor of laws from Panjab University in 2004, according to his profile on the Indian parliament’s website.
He was designated senior counsel of the Supreme Court of India, became additional solicitor general of India in 1991 and was elected to the Rajya Sabha for Congress in in 2002.
His hobbies, according to his parliamentary profile, are “table tennis, wrestling, reading, travel, music and films”.
Khursheed, who was given the foreign affairs ministry today, had been involved in a public spat with campaigner Arvind Kejriwal after allegations of impropriety relating to a charity his wife was involved in, who has since filed a defamation action against several publications and TV channels.
Khursheed said in an interview earlier this month that the entry of foreign lawyers should be left to the bar, adding that the collegium system of judicial appointments might be reformed.
UPDATE: PTI reports Kumar’s first ministerial statement that judicial delays had to be decreased. “We need to cut delays in justice delivery system. But most importantly is to restore the fine balance between different organs of government,” he said. “The constitutional spirit and its discipline must be imbibed across the border. I believe we will need to bring a bit of constitutional discipline in the manner in which the Law Ministry is expected to be pivot for harmonising various jurisdiction within the government.”

now forget the foreign law firms entry.
Just hope that this guy's firm doesn't snatch some work away ( or given to it due to ashwani's elevation) from your firm.
I have been practicing in Calcutta High Court for the last 31+years. I am making this suggestion from my this long experience. For amelioration of the present judicial system in THE HIGH COURT:
1. REVIVE THE OLD SYSTEM OF TRANSFERRING THE JUDGES ESPECIALLY ELEVATED FROM THE LOCAL BAR ASSOCIATIONS ;
2. APPOINT NEW JUDGES TO THIS HIGH COURT UPTO TO ITS CAPACITY
TO CUT THE HUGE PENDING CASES;
3.THE PRESENT PROCESS OF SELECTING THE JUDGES SHOULD DONE AWAY WITH TO AVOID CORRUPTION AND NEPOTISM. IN THIS PROCESS MANY ARE BEING ELEVATED WHO ARE NOT ELIGIBLE AT ALL. THE JUDGES'PROPENSITY TO GIVE LUCRATIVE ORDERS TO THE KNOWN AND WELL ESTABLISED LEAVING THE MAJORITY OF THE LAWYERS IN LURCH EVEN IF THEY PRESENT ARGUABLE CASES SHOULD BE DONE AWAY WITH KEEPING IN MIND THE HON'BLE APEX COURT'S REMARK ABOUT THE ALLAHABAD HIGH COURT. CORRUPTION AND NEPOTISM SHOULD BE CURTAILED WITH STERN DETERMINATION.
SORRY , IF YOU TREAT THIS SHORT COMMENT AS AN ENCROACHMENT ON YOUR DOMAIN . BEING A GRASS-ROOT LEVEL FIGHTING ADVOCATTE I THOUGHT IT IS COMPREHENSIBLE AS YOU WERE ALSO AN ADVOCATE.
