Anand and Anand scales up Chennai operations on back of IPAB

Growing contentiously

Anand and Anand doubled its office space in Chennai last month by securing lease to the property adjacent to its previously existing office premises in AR Villa.

Anand and Anand managing partner Pravin Anand said: “It was but natural to scale up operations in Chennai with the presence of IPAB [Intellectual Property Appellate Board] there.”

He told Legally India that the volume of appellate board matters had gone up in the region and he had personally appeared before the board in at least five matters in the last month.

Partner MS Bharath, assisted by two senior associates and three associates, heads the practice in Chennai. Bharath relocated to head Chennai in 2009, six years after the firm opened in the city.

Other associates were relocated from various offices of the firm, well before the expansion, according to a statement from the firm.

Bharath told Legally India that the Chennai office initially functioned largely as a back-office for Delhi, but in the last four years the firm’s litigation practice grew in the region with a number of local matters and multi-jurisdictional matters from Delhi, Bangalore and Cochin.

“We’ve had quite an all-round representation under all four heads: trademarks, patents, copyrights and designs,” he said.

In addition to an increase in floor space, the firm also upgraded its infrastructure in Chennai to improve connectivity with IT and applications in the Delhi office.
