Exclusive: Crawford Bayley associate partner Krishna Venkat will join AZB & Partners in Mumbai from 1 June as a senior associate in the M&A and corporate practice.

Venkat completed his undergraduate in law from the University of Manchester in the UK and began his career at Crawford Bayley in 2005, specialising in M&A, restructurings and foreign investment and exchange-related work.

He was among the first six senior associate who were promoted to the firm’s new non-equity associate partner rung last year.

AZB Mumbai managing partner Zia Mody said that she was happy about Venkat’s joining.

Venkat declined to comment when contacted.

Crawford Bayley corporate and M&A partner Sanjay Buch said: “It’s a loss for the firm but we have to move on in life.”

He added that the firm’s associate partner designation would remain, which was intended as a period for lawyers to acclimatise themselves with the firm culture and remain for a longer time. “We are a 160-year-old law firm and there’s a constant lookout for good talent to be retained… The [associate partner] platform is offered for the young talent to prove themselves. If they’re capable and they fit in the culture of the firm, they can capitalise on the firm and the platform.”

In April Crawford Bayley promoted Renuka Shetty, who practices transactional and litigation work, to associate partner. Other firms with an associate partner designation include Economic Laws Practice (ELP) and Khaitan & Co.
