Jindal Global Law School emerged victorious in the Asian rounds and was the only Indian team to qualify to the world finals. Rajalakshmi Natarajan from GNLU Gandhinagar won the award for the best oralist and Jindal took home the award for the best complainant written submissions in this Tier 5 international moot in the MPL.

The Jindal team consisted of Chummar Akkara and Aakriti Mittal. Mittal said that the team had a great experience in the moot. “This was the tenth edition of ELSA and the panellists themselves said that the problem this year was the toughest ever. All the panellists were experienced people from the WTO Secretariat who had a lot of expertise in trade. It was a wonderful experience to speak in front of them.”

There were 13 teams which participated in the moot out of which 5 teams were from India. “The competition was really intense because everybody was very well prepared.”Mittal said that the team was looking forward for the world rounds at France in May 2012. “Preparations are coming along well. There are a lot of things to work on. We are brushing up on the issues. We are also looking for funding as this is an expensive moot.” Mittal specifically mentioned that the team wouldn’t have won without the help of their professor coach James J Nedumpara. “We attribute to this win to him.”

The moot results were confirmed by Letizia Raschella-Sergi, the Asia Pacific Academic Supervisor of the moot. The rounds were held at Jakarta, Indonesia.

Pro bono Enviro moot

Symbiosis Law School Noida got past NLIU Bhopal in the finals of this Tier 5 MPL moot. NLIU Bhopal also won the best memorandum award. Pooja Kane from Jindal Global Law School bagged the best researcher award and Aastha Dua from ILS Pune took home the best speaker award. RGNUL Patiala and School of Law, Christ University, Bangalore finished semifinalists in the moot.

Speakers Rangam Sharma and Kathakoli Bose along with researcher Swati Singh formed the Symbiosis Noida team. Sharma said that the team had a good experience. “We went with the mindset that we had nothing to lose. It was our first moot as a team. We wanted to win. We were a bit under confident, but our Director Sir gave us a boost before the moot.”

Sharma praised the judging standards during the moot. “It was absolutely brilliant. In most moots, the prelim judges won’t even know the facts of the problem. Here, the judges had read the facts and they understood the moot problem. They were not bombarding us with random questions, but they asked quality questions. It was an excellent experience.”

Sharma also mentioned that there was intense competition in the moot. “The other teams were good and they were well researched. NLIU Bhopal, Christ, ILS and RGNUL were really good, they had brilliant research. You could feel the competition.” Sharma mentioned that they still have a long road ahead when it comes to mooting. “The best part is that we are still first years and this win gave us a lot of confidence.”

Diwagar & Krithika from SOEL Chennai confirmed the results and said that 33 teams participated in the moot. SOEL Chennai was awarded MPL organiser points.

Leiden – Sarin moot

RMLNLU Lucknow defeated Leiden University in the finals of the competition. Ruchika Rao from Nalsar Hyderabad finished as the top oralist and bagged the best speaker award and RMLNLU Lucknow won the award for the best applicant memorandum in this Tier 5 international moot.

The RMLNLU Lucknow team consisted of Ishita Pant and Veena Kamath. “The overall experience was just too good. The judging style was amazing. We had judges from the International Civil Aviation Organisation and other places. They asked questions and were very patient”, said Kamath. “There were 12 teams which participated in the international rounds. We had four rounds initially and then the top two teams participated in the finals.”

Kamath said that they were excited to face Leiden University in the finals. “The Leiden team had a coach, their first speaker was an LL. M student and their second speaker was a Ph.D candidate. The third guy was married. Their team was very experienced.”

Kamath mentioned that all the participating teams were good. “Almost every team had a coach. Among the Indian teams, only GNLU had a coach”, she said.

Nitin Sarin from Sarin & Co. confirmed the results and said that the final round of the moot was presided by Judge Gilbert Guillaume, Former President of the ICJ. “Ruchika Rao, the best oralist in the moot, bagged a full paid scholarship for the Advanced Masters in Air and Space Law at the International Institute of Air & Space Law and Leiden University.” Sarin also mentioned that next year’s competition is scheduled to be held at Abu Dhabi and will be sponsored by Etihad Airlines.
