Indian law schools Nalsar Hyderabad and NLU Delhi suffered losses at the hands of the two foreign law schools during the semifinal rounds. However, Jyoti Maheshwari from NLSIU won the best speaker award and Ankit Namdeo from RMLNLU Lucknow bagged the best researcher award. GIMC: Clash of the MPL 3 toppers – NLSIU Bangalore v NLU Jodhpur
NLSIU Bangalore defeated NLU Jodhpur in the final rounds of the GNLU International Moot Court Competition (GIMC). ILS Pune and NLIU Bhopal finished semifinalists. ILS took home 20 points from this Tier 4 moot as it won both best memorandum and best speaker awards, the latter citation going to speaker Harsha Gupta.
The team from NLSIU had speakers Tarun Krishnakumar & Jasraj Singh, with Neeraj Vyas as researcher. Singh and Vyas praised the judging quality throughout the moot. “The judging was exemplary. The diversity of judges during the various rounds was great. It was a new experience for me,”, said Singh. Krishnakumar praised the final bench, which consisted of trade law experts such as Prof Mitsuo Matsushita and Mr Lakshmikumaran, among others. “There is only one way I can describe the final bench – world class.”
Researcher Vyas told MPL that the semifinal round against ILS Pune was the toughest round they faced in the moot. Krishnakumar felt that there had been a revival of mooting culture in NLSIU. “The participation among NLSIU students in moots has increased tremendously. Further, credit should go to the moot support group consisting of senior students who helped us right from the beginning. All three of us had not yet studied trade law as a course in law school. But our seniors helped us tremendously with the basics.” NLSIU was pleased with the moot organizers as well. Krishnakumar said:“Radhika, Abhilasha and Kapish and the rest of the team were very hospitable throughout the moot.”
A total of 37 teams participated in the moot, which was conducted at GNLU's new Gandhinagar campus. GNLU was awarded 2 MPL organiser points as the college did not participate in the moot.
NUJS Herbert Smith: NLIU Bhopal v. GLC Mumbai
GLC Mumbai defeated last year’s winner NLIU Bhopal in the final round.. Jindal Global Law School and [[Symbiosis Law School, Pune finished semifinalists. GLC also won the best speaker and the best memorandum citations.
The GLC team consisted of speakers Raunak Shah, Riva Shah with researcher Niharika Chaturvedi and additional researcher Gathi Prakash. Best Speaker Riva Shah said: “The moot problem was drafted so well that during every round of the moot we were asked different questions on the same set of facts. The problem drafting was just amazing”. Speaking on the various approaches that judges in the final bench had towards the problem she said: “It was the best bench that I have faced. We had one Herbert Smith partner who had a pure commercial view to the problem, we had a Calcutta High Court judge who was more concerned with the legal aspects and we had an Oxford University professor who had an academic outlook to the problem.”
Shah told MPL as to how they had to adopt a different approach for each round. In the prelims, they were judged largely by ex-mooters. She said: “During the semifinals, we had High Court judges who only cared about procedure”.
16 teams participated in the moot. NUJS was awarded 2 MPL organiser points.
Surana Corp: NLSIU Bangalore v. Christ University
Christ University overcame NLSIU in the all-Bangalore final rounds of the Surana Corporate law moot. RMLNLU Lucknow and Symbiosis Law School, Noida finished semifinalists. Chahat Chawla from Christ won the best speaker award and NLSIU Bangalore won their 7th best memorandum citation this season.
Speakers Chahat Chawla and Ajay Kumar with researcher Roshil Nichani represented Christ University at the moot. Chawla said that the moot problem was very interesting as it was based on the Direct Tax Code instead of the Income Tax Act, which being repealed for the moot gave them few Indian precedents and they had to look outside.
Chawla said: “During the finals, we had Justice Shylendra Kumar who grilled us very well. The quarterfinal round against SVKM Mumbai and the semis against RMLNLU Lucknow were the most difficult rounds we faced during the moot.”
The number of teams participating in this Tier 4 moot peaked to 44 this season. Host law school JSS Law College, Mysore bagged 2 MPL organiser points.
KLA Moot: CLC v. NUJS
Campus Law Centre Delhi cruised past NUJS Kolkata in the final rounds of the Kerala Law Academy Moot. NLU Delhi and AKK New Law Academy, Pune finished as semifinalists. There was some confusion regarding the conduct of the pre-quarterfinal rounds,” she said. That apart, Zutshi stated that the moot was a satisfactory experience. owing to “fantastic” judging and good competition from other participants.
Agarwal said she liked arguing before Kerala High Court judges in the final round. “We didn’t expect them to grill us a lot, but it did make us think on our feet,” he said.
This Tier 4 moot saw participation from 40 teams across the country.
