Exclusive: To celebrate jubilee, BCI splits top moot into 3 at Nirma, NLU J and NLU D

The Bar Council of India (BCI) Trust announced that it would conduct three BCI moots this season in collaboration with Institute of Law, Nirma University, NLU Jodhpur and NLU Delhi respectively.

The mega BCI mooting festival is intended to commemorate the golden jubilee of India’s central lawyer representative body, which was set up under the Advocates Act 1961. The three BCI moots are scheduled to take place from mid February of next year.

The BCI press release dated 29th November invited each law university to register three teams consisting of two speakers and one researcher for the three moots. Law colleges affiliated to a particular university are required to participate in internal selection rounds within the university for filtering the top three teams which will take part in the BCI moots.

BCI Trust secretary-in-charge CS Kandpal told Legally India that BCI has decided to roll out many initiatives to celebrate its fiftieth year of existence.

“The recent announcement is a part of the golden jubilee celebrations of BCI,” he explained. “We are also conducting workshops and other programmes in various parts of the country.”

Kandpal indicated that the current initiative would considerably increase student participation in the moot. “Each university is expected to send three teams and participate in all the three BCI moots. They cannot send the same team to all the three moots. This will increase student interest.”

Kandpal also confirmed that all the three proposed moots will be equivalent in terms of standing.

Last year, the BCI conducted an international moot based on arbitration law, discontinuing its 26 year old practice of having challenging moot problems on national laws. Though the moot did not see any involvement from foreign teams, 33 teams from across the country participated. Two-time, undefeated MPL champions Nalsar Hyderabad won the top-rated moot after defeating NLSIU Bangalore in the final rounds.

Kandpal said that the BCI Trust had decided to scrap the international moot this season, and that the three new moots would all be based on national laws.

It is understood that most universities have already finished their internal mooting selections and allotments and could find it difficult to allot two additional quality teams for the BCI.

The three hosting universities (Nirma, NLU J and NLU D) would not be allowed to participate in the moot each is respectively hosting, according to Kandpal.

The BCI moot was a tier 3 MPL moot. Team MPL proposes to list each of the three BCI in tier 3. Comments are invited.
