Outlook, which commissioned research agency MDRA to carry out the research, ranked NLSIU Bangalore, Nalsar Hyderabad, NLIU Bhopal and NLU Jodhpur in the top four, followed by ILS Pune and Symbiosis Pune.
“Selection process” was again weighted the most heavily with 287 points, followed by infrastructure with 213 points. NLSIU achieved a lower score than Nalsar in the “selection process category”. Both colleges participate in the Common Law Admissions Test (CLAT), where NLSIU has been the first preference for two years running.
In infrastructure NLSIU scored the highest with 204, ahead of Nalsar on 199. NLIU Bhopal also outscored Nalsar with 203 points.
In placements Outlook ranked NLSIU with 153 points just before Nalsar, while NLIU Bhopal and NLU Jodhpur had almost the same score at around 137. In the online version of the magazine no detailed methodology was published about the law school rankings, although for engineering more information was given on its website.
Department of Law BHU Varanasi, GLC Mumbai, Amity Law School Delhi and GNLU Gandhinagar occupied places seven to 10.
In August 2010 NUJS professor Shamnad Basheer and two students wrote official letters of complaint to Outlook India and India Today questioning their methodologies and requesting clarification, such as Outlook’s choice to attribute greater weight to the selection process than to faculty, for example.
Outlook replied on 1 September 2010 with further information on its rating system, which the NUJS complainants described as “lackadaisical” in turn in their response.
Basheer told Legally India yesterday that NUJS therefore chose not to supply any figures to Outlook. Outlook stated in its table that “only institutes that submitted objective data on time have been ranked”.
NLU Jodhpur, which was in the top 10 in last year’s Outlook rankings but made seventh in 2009, made an entry this year at number four.

A side note: If NUJS had participated, which is to say permitted Outlook to consider it for rankings, at the most it could have found a place between fourth to sixth. I say this because it would have scored very low against infrastructure; somewhere similar to GLC, Mumbai and hence nosedived. In hindsight I would say well done NUJS! you saved yourself the blushes.

Hope you are speaking abt GLC and not some famous institution on GB road/MIRA road, coz if you are speaking abt the latter we all would vouch for it. Mumbai that way remains the best in the country, alas when it comes to Law schools you'll take light years to catch up!!

Law schools and law is just not about some job in some family owned concern ( read a law firm), thereby these law school rankings cant just be solely based on the same.
Most students in the National Law Schools opt for high paying jobs to try and repay or justify the high fees which they pay through 5 years. However I guess that could never be your concern with the miserly change you pay at GLC in the name of fees. (Your fees seems to be the only thing inflation hasnt caught up with)
So opt for the life which most of your illustrious alumni have chosen for in the court!

Lets see what GLC provides: very few classes... the students are mostly found interning in Mumbai’s law firms for the complete duration of their course, in some case for 3 to 4 years. So in effect what they do is join GLC to get hired as a intern and keep working at a minimal stipend until they get their degree. They are taken onboard by the same law firm if they are half decent and the law firm has any sense of gratitude to the work that they did at less then the salary of a peon.
GLC is lucky to be ranked here as it is not better than Amity and certainly not than GNLU. I think it got 8th rank because of its placement in Mumbai firm where prior to joining they already have slogged for 3-4 years. And mind you that is not what industry interface is.

i don't get this obsession with washing plates. with so many things to do in a city (as opposed to some godforsaken village), when you actually have a life, running a tap for 20 seconds over your plate is hardly the downside of anything.

Evidently, nobody at NUJS felt the need to have their self-worth validated by a magazine which is incapable of even defending its own views. The magazine probably realizes that people don't buy their magazine to read what they already know! It's only when the rankings have that element of randomness (although these rankings seem to reek of randomness sprinkled with a shadow of truth - which might just in fact be coincidental!) that anyone would even buy their magazine!
To see NLS / NALSAR students actually SIDING with such blatantly erroneous rankings makes one think about how goddamn insecure students in these law schools are!! Not insecure? Most of the NLS / NALSAR kids commenting here actually wanted to make it to GLC and BHU, but couldn't. They feel vindicated now that NLS and NALSAR have been ranked higher than GLC and BHU!

GLC's selection procedure is the MOST rigorous (244.8 points)! BHU's selection procedure was too hard to crack for them, you see (hence the 238.4 points!). NALSAR was a bit easier (233.7 points). For those who couldn't make it to GLC / BHU, their distant third choice was NALSAR, and NLS was their fall back option (231.8 points).

My suggestion is let LI also keep track of number of moots participated by a law school and allot marks for only those moots where if not the top ten then top six law schools participate. Else the one who goes to all places generally end up lucky to earn points and hence the moot ranking. I am interested in knowing, how many moots did NALSAR, NUJS, NLUD, NLSIU, NLIU, HNLU, GNLU, ILS and NLUJ participated. I would not be surprised to know that NLSIU, NLIU, ILS participated in far less number of moots when compared to others. Also, a lot of law schools do not support funding of international moots and hence are adversely affected by the current rankings. Just see the points picked up by some the law schools because of international moots. Hence I think there is some serious flaw with the rankings.
So, according to you what should be the parameters to judge a law school?
I think they should be Faculty, Selection Process, Recruitment, Student Achievements. Start ups. Whats wrong with that? They want to do something of their own, mind it.

NUJS deserves to be number 2. And that is what the democratically elected CLAT preferences show. NUJS is the number 2 choice of CLAT aspirants.

However, these rankings are quite unimpressive, they do not capture any of the real happenings around these law schools.
As a principles stand that NUJS has taken, I support it entirely. Many other universities go all out pandering to these magazines providing rankings. Of course I see it doesn't always quite work out the way they want.
NUJS did make it in the top 10. It questions the credibility of the ranking. Wow! If your law school needs just a slight pat on its back for you to feel more secure for being ranked by someone with no credibility, these rankings are for you alone. Mind you, not for the aspirants, not for the industry, but just you.
Great move NUJS! Other law schools must give a serious thought to the methodology, and if they too feel that the rankings lack credibility, they should give it a miss too and force these magazines to improve and make their methodology more transparent.
May I kindly remind you that you are addressing two of the oldest and most prestigious law schools of the country. They are still one of the most elite law colleges India has with a very strong alumni.
Oldest??? yes! but ELITE/PRESTIGIOUS??? you definitely appear to be slightly out of touch with realty. Any one and everyone gets through these to colleges, in fact ILS should change its name to MLS (Marathi Law Society, thanks to the state quota) and for Symbi, the less said is more.

- How does NLSIU get less in selection than GLC and ILS ??
- Is NLSIU really just 5 points ahead of NALSAR and 2 points ahead of Bhopal? I dont doubt that NALSAR is an excellent place - but seriously - 5 points ? Bhopal though is eons behind in infrastructure - witnessed in person.
- Jodhpur has less infrastructure than Bhopal ?
- Symby gets placement scores comparable to Jodhpur and Bhopal ?? Are they referring to placement of the five year degree students or placement of buildings within the campus ?
This is just a sample of the bizarre inferences one has to come to if the rankings had any credibility. NUJS has done well not to provide data. I think the CLAT preference speaks for itself and only highlights what a farce of a survey these magazines are conducting each year in the name of journalism.
And one exam doesn't test your future. ILS has better selection because it takes your 12th percentage into consideration. Not the marks of some question paper which already has answers underlined.

How are 12th marks a better indicator than Legal Aptitude, General Knowledge, Math, Legal Writing (like the section on legal notes we had earlier), English, etc?
Entrances are far superior at weeding out the nerds who learn by rote and get good marks and perform miserably when you test their acumen for legal studies.

1. In the methodology or Outlook table it states that only colleges where more than 3 batches have passed out are eligible. That would exclude quite a few national law schools, including NLU Delhi.

is NUJS really doing a philanthropic exercise by boycotting these rankings and writing letters, with the fear that the law aspirants will get a wrong picture altogether? if noojies really know they're good, why don't they stop publicizing about it and getting insecure over any law school ranks? every1 knows how "accurate" outlook ranks are, and anyways ranks cannot be clear to any aspirant if every year some or the other law school is left out of their survey- all the more reason why, any CLAT aspriant will research law school ranks properly before filling in his preferences.
'Selection Process' has four components: type of entrance exam, application to selected ratio, fees, age.
Under the 'Selection Process' head NLS got 231.8 and NALSAR got 233.7.
Let us follow the methodology adopted by Outlook and redo the sums. We find that type of entrance exam is same for NLS and NALSAR namely CLAT. Application to selected ratio would be same as both have equal number of seats in 2011 namely 83. I do not know how fees would affect the points allotted under it but I assume that lower fees would give higher points but NLS and NALSAR charge same around Rs. 1.70 lakhs pa. Finally for age NLS is 23 years and NALSAR is 13 years old, I presume that points would be higher for older institutions.
Thus on four components under head of 'Selection Process' NLS and NALSAR would score equally on first three namely type of entrance exam, application to selected ratio and fees. So the only component left is age where NLS would get more points than NALSAR.
So question is how did NLS score less that NALSAR under the head of selection process?

Outlook is a business - they have to sell copies, preferably more copies next month than the last. How many copies do you think they would sell if they printed "NLS is the best" year after year? that's why the eyeball grabbing stunts - "ILS pips NLS", "NUJS not figured", and so on. Even negative publicity is publicity, and money paid is revenue irrespective of whether the magazine is bought to read or to wipe your arse. Those jokers at Outlook and IT are laughing their way to the bank while curious folk buy this issue to decipher the survey.
For myself, I don't like this one but - it stinks. But then I'm not a businessman and in all likelihood never will be. So I did the best thing I could think of after that stupid ILS / NLS ranking fiasco - I did not renew my subscription and never regretted it.
On second thought: if Outlook is guilty of falsehood for the sake of more eyeballs and hence more business then what do you make of the WB NUJS tactics of self glorification? I am sure you would say not eyeballs but public interest. I just laugh it off...

The issue at hand is how scientific these rankings are, given the flimsy basis on which they are prepared and the apparent lack of reasons behind the distinctions. But of course, it's no doubt easier to neatly sidestep this than to search for an answer. Can't blame you for not wanting to exercise your grey cells - i.e. if you have any. But just in the event you do, may be a good idea to try and analyse the rankings in private.
Never mind reputation, never mind the overall choice of candidates sitting for CLAT, never mind the opinions of legal professionals all over the country, never mind academic performance and the outcomes of national and international level moot court championships.
I scored 138 in my CLAT and was shortlisted for SLS. I had the option for going to many of the law schools this magazine has ranked above NUJS; but I didn't. I opted for NUJS as my third preference after NLS and NALSAR and got there. I didn't do it out of compulsion or any strong love for Kolkata, I did it after extensive research and consultation with many legal professionals. And I do not regret my decision. I look forward to five years at one of the three elite law colleges of India and I'm forever proud to be an NUJSite.
