Vidhii opens Delhi office, retains media/banking industry seniors

Vidhii's Desai: Likes a big cake
Vidhii's Desai: Likes a big cake
Exclusive: Vidhii Partners will open up an office in Delhi with three former Paras Kuhad Associates lawyers and has taken two senior industry experts onto its internal advisory board to bolster its new media practice and growth strategy.

Three lawyers are initially opening the office, with Ajay Kumar who had been at Paras Kuhad Associates until 2009, leading the Supreme Court practice as a partner.

Former Paras Kuhad senior associates Biju Mat and Dhiraj Kapoor, each with more than 10 years of experience, have joined in Delhi as senior lawyers specialising respectively in litigation, and in real estate and corporate work.

The 2,500-square-foot Sarvadoya Enclave-based office, near to the IIT Delhi, will be completed by July, said co-founding partner Manish Desai.

Vidhii’s Kolkata office is now one month old and has grown by another lateral lawyer, after Legally India first reported on the plans in March. By 25 June the firm would move into an office on Kolkata’s Park Street.

Strategic

In addition Vidhii has now hired two non-lawyer industry experts to assist the firm part-time on business development and strategy.

Supran Sen, who was previously involved with more than 14 film industry bodies including as general secretary of the Film Federation of India (FFI), will be assisting Vidhii partner Nandini Mehta who set up a media-client focused office in Mumbai’s Bandra area in December of last year. Sen is currently also a committee member advising the Bengal government on Bengali cinema.

Madhukar, who was formerly a member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and chairman of the United Bank of India, has also joined Vidhii on retainer in an advisory capacity. He currently also holds a number of board memberships

Desai explained that informally Madhukar had been an advisor when he was still a partner at Paras Kuhad Associates before he jointly set up Vidhii in 2009.

“As a growing organisation we have a certain vision and have a certain view towards growing,” said Desai, “but we need some senior people whom we can bounce off ideas and who have been in a position in much larger organisations.”

“We use them as correctives wherever we go wrong,” he added. The vision for the firm was to expand horizontally and provide a lot of independence to the professional and to retain them on a long-term basis rather than retaining them as employees.”

A total of 70 per cent of each branch office’s profits was retained in that office and intended to be shared between the partners and lawyers in each office, said Desai. “We want to increase the size of the cake so much so that everybody benefits.”
