Law firms such as Trilegal, Lakshmi Kumaran & Sridharan, Poovayya & Co, Adlaw Partners, Harsha & Co and companies like GMR Infrastructure, Infosys, Roamware and legal process outsourcing (LPO) company CPA Global made final offers to 17 out of 52 students who had opted for campus placements.

Another five students picked up jobs through pre-placement offers at other local firms like Justice & Care, Narasappa Dorsawamy and Raja, and Delhi-based Parekh and Co while two and one student respectively would join the bar to assist senior advocates in Delhi and Allahabad.

One student each was accepted to study LLMs at National University Singapore (NUS), King's College London, University College London (UCL) and Keele University, while one student would be joining the Law School of Tanzania for a nine-month license certificate program.

A part of Bangalore University, Christ College of Law was set up in 2006 and the current rounds of placements concerned 75 students constituting its first batch.

The placement committee’s head and student convener Gautam Chawla, who was supported by faculty coordinator Sarah Thomas, recounted having to create visibility amongst potential recruiters one of the main challenges.

“We faced multiple challenges. The first of which was to let the potential recruiters know that we existed,” said Chawla. “The students knew from the very beginning that since there was no ‘tag’ to ride on, they had to make a mark for themselves.”

“This process, though was started from the first year itself, gained momentum in our third year when we formed various groups and committees.”

Christ College’s placement committee, besides having an industry mentor, also sought NLSIU Bangalore placement faculty’s help to guide them through the process while the students constantly engaged in discussions about the rules and modalities of placements.

Chawla explained that they had discussed and reached a consensus about aspects such as the ranking of the students based on the marks obtained in Bangalore University examinations, whether to hold placements on a rolling basis or on three designated days in January end or February 2011, the first offer rule whereby the students were deemed out of the placement process once they received the first offer and many more.

Chawla conceded that they had the geographical advantage of being in a city like Bangalore, where the college was able to send students who had already been placed to firms and corporate houses in the city to hand-deliver the recruitment brochure to the person in charge of recruitments.

Recruitment started on a rolling basis from January 2011, said Chawla, adding: “The 2011 batch lost out on quite a few opportunities only because we were too late and were often told so as well by the potential recruiters.”

The 2012 batch already had vigorous plans in place for improving the next year’s recruitment process, he said.

Nalsar Hyderabad’s 2011 batch placed 59 with firms or companies.
