DLA Piper has promoted 1997 NLSIU Bangalore graduate and foreign law firm veteran Biswajit Chatterjee to its partnership in Singapore.

Legal director Chatterjee, who was hired in September 2008 from Allen & Overy having started his career in 2000 at Jones Day affiliate P&A Law Offices in India, will be a DLA partner from 1 May, according to a DLA press release.

He specialises in capital markets - a practice area that has grown rapidly at DLA over the past 12 months catapulting the firm to the top of Legally India’s IPO and QIP league tables for the financial year.

Chatterjee (pictured) is dual Indian and US qualified and started working abroad from 2005.

He told Legally India that having gone abroad worked both ways: “What happened to a lot of us who moved out in 2005 and 2006, is that we probably missed the most busy years in India.”

He added that while this meant that one could miss out on making as many local client contacts and faster career progression at domestic Indian firms, working at international firms allowed one to build better experience of working as international counsel on transaction, which was valuable in a foreign firms’ partnership.
