Exclusive: Delhi-based intellectual property (IP) boutique IP Gurus has acted for the manufacturers of Rubik’s Cubes resulting in police arrests of four alleged counterfeit cube puzzle sellers.

IP Gurus, which was started up almost two years ago by former FoxMandal Little partner Pooja Dodd, represented toy maker Seven Towns, the company that owns the rights to the best-selling Rubik’s Cube puzzle.

Dodd explained that this was a criminal action against the distributors, who sourced counterfeit cubes from China.

Late last year, she said, the firm had also filed a civil action in Mumbai against another company.

“Somebody was manufacturing cubes in Bombay and we got an injunction from the court that asked them not to sell any cubes in the same packaging,” added Dodd. “They don’t use the word ‘Rubik’ but they are using similar colours and the size of the cube is the same.”

In that case the firm and clients Seven Towns was pursuing a passing-off action in the Delhi High Court after the injunction.
