Bharucha opens greenfield in Delhi with lateral partner

Exclusive: Bharucha & Partners has opened its first office outside Mumbai, entering New Delhi with partner Kumkum Sen from Raijnder Narain & Co, nearly a year after the firm opened in a second Mumbai location.

Bharucha’s managing partner M P Bharucha said: “The core focus of our legal practice in Delhi is going to be exactly like that of Mumbai’s. We’re a corporate commercial law firm and we will continue to expand our transactional practices.”

“It is fully operational and there is one partner and two associates serving in Delhi office at the moment. We are looking to recruit more lawyers there.”

Sen is heading the office, which is based near to Delhi’s High Court and Supreme Court in the Diplomatic Enclave of the Chanakyapuri area at Enkay House, 4/48 Malcha Marg.

Commenting on her strategy for growing the new office, Sen said: “Other than bringing on board my existing clientele, I intend to leverage the cumulative combination of the existing B&P capabilities with my contacts and resources.”

She started her career as an arguing counsel with Kolkata-based senior advocate S B Mukherjee before joining Khaitan & Co in New Delhi. She was admitted as an advocate on record of the Supreme Court of India in 1982. Thereafter, she left Khaitan & Co to co-found Khaitan & Khaitan which in now called Khaitan Jayakar Sud and Vohra (KJSV).

In 2004 Sen started in Delhi-based corporate law firm Rajinder Narain & Co and was a partner there until last month when she took up her new assignment. Raijnder Narain managing partner Ravi Nath was unavailable for comment.

Sen’s multifaceted practice specialised in structuring inbound and outbound M&A, divestments, infrastructure and dispute resolution including domestic and international arbitration, said M P Bharucha. She has represented transnational corporations including BMW, Starwood, Sumitomo Electric, GE Energy, Areva, ALSTOM and Sinochem and public sector enterprises such as Delhi Metro and Delhi Development Authority he added.

The firm’s Mumbai corporate department is headed by co-founding partner Alka Bharucha out of Ballard Estate, while its litigation office headed by M P Bharucha is situated in Colaba.
