NLSIU Bangalore has moved back into the second place of the Mooting Premier League (MPL) sponsored by Clifford Chance after winning a confirmed 10 points for the fourth best memorial at the world finals of the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition.
The fourth best memorial, which has now been confirmed by event organisers, entitles NLSIU to 10 MPL points as the equivalent to an honourable mention in a Tier 1 event.
This year three Indian teams - NLU Jodhpur, NLSIU Bangalore and Nalsar Hyderabad - had advanced to the octa finals at the Jessup world rounds.
NLSIU and Nalsar reached the quarter finals, where NLSIU lost to New York's Columbia Law School, which went on to become the eventual runners-up in the event. The NLSIU team consisted of Raag Yadava, V.Niranjan, Gautam Bhatia and Subhang Nair.
Nalsar defeated University College London (UCL) to qualify for the semi-finals where the team lost to a team from Australian National University, who were the eventual winners of this year's competition.
The semi-finalist position entitled Nalsar for 10 points which was allocated to Nalsar in the league table, as reported on 30 March. The college's team consisted of speakers Shatadru Chakraborty and Dhananjaya Mishra and researchers Brajendu Bhaskar and Ashish Parekh.
Nalsar still leads MPL with 149 points, while NLSIU is now at 102 points, closely followed by NLU Jodhpur with 94 points in third position.
We are confirming the honourable mentions of Willem C. Vis Vienna with convenors and will update the rankings in shortly.
The MPL is sponsored by Clifford Chance and the top eight ranked law colleges will share a generous prize fund of Rs 1.5 lakhs provided by the firm.

Correct me if I am wrong, but is not an "Octa Finalist" Citation at Jessup big enough to put it on par with an "Honorable Mention". Considering that HMs at Vis Vienna are given to the 64 teams qualifying for the second round, it seems a little absurd that a pool of 16 teams competing in the Jessup Octas is not given the same standing.
In such a case, both NLU Jodhpur and NLS should get more points for their Octa qualifications.
Of course, the above is based on your statement that : "Any major citations of teams will be classed as honourable mentions, worth 10 points." (www.legallyindia.com/20100331629/Mooting/nujs-continues-mpl-recovery-wins-manfred-lachs-funding-over-nls-nalsar)
I think that an being in the Octas in Jessup is certainly a "major citation", especially when the 64 and 32 at Vis Vienna and 16 at Vis HKG, are seen as such major citations.
Your comment only validates the common perception that NLSites are rude and arrogant, which - atleast for the NLS alumni - is not very pleasant. You have a long career ahead, and a little humility will augur well for you in the long run. All the best.

A quick response to the scoring criteria. As we outlined previously for this MPL season we will have to stick with the criteria that were published and openly available for several months.
If we make changes at this late stage of the competition, however reasonable those changes would be, it would be equally unfair to other competitors.
But we are taking those suggestions on board and will definitely incorporate many of these changes and suggestions for the MPL 2. We also have some exciting ideas about how to improve next seasons' MPL and look forward to telling you all about it.
An unrelated point, re comment #4 - not wanting to get into huge detail or make excuses but the incorrect spelling of Subhang Nair's name was actually mistakenly sent to us by email from the organiser of the moot.
Anyway, happy mooting!
Kian
and seeking a clarification - are any points given on the MPL to teams which make it to the advanced rounds at Vienna? (I was under the impression that it is only for the semi-finals and above)
All da best guys!! :-)
