Background
History
Dept. of Law, University of Calcutta also popularly known as Hazra law college was founded in the year of 1909. Initially in the period from 1909 to 1983 the name of the college was University College of Law. Post 1983 the name was renamed to Dept. of Law, University of Calcutta.

LL.B. – 40% at West Bengal Higher Secondary Examination or its equivalent from any other nationally recognized board is the minimum eligibility criteria to sit for the university organized entrance examination. A total of 120 seats are available.
LL.B.(H) – On Merit. 50 seats are available.
LL.M. – LL.B. (Hons.) from University of Calcutta or other AllIndia Council of Technical Education / UGC recognized law schools, in order of merit. 35 seats are available in total.
Ph.D. - LL.M. from University of Calcutta or other AICTE / University Grants Commission (India)recognized law schools, in order of merit.
LL.D. - Ph.D. Degree from University of Calcutta or other AICTE / UGC recognized law schools, in order of merit.
Fee structure
As Dept of Law, Calcutta University is a government institution a minimal amount of Rs 125 is charged per month as tution fees from students. Apart from the tution fees no other notable fees are taken.

The Library of the University has the collection of more than ten lakh books as well as volumes of bound Journals, M.Phil. and Ph.D. dissertations, proceedings of conferences, reports, maps, standards, patents, newspapers, manuscripts, microfilms, CD-ROMs. The University has also established a BCW Cell for providing facilities to the S.C./S.T./O.B.C. candidates.
