Uber cab rape-accused driver jailed, striking lawyers promise not to interfere in proceedings

A Delhi court today sent Uber cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav accused of raping a 25-year-old woman 5 December to 14 days judicial custody.

Metropolitan Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey sent Yadav to judicial custody until 24 December after police told court that he is not required for further custodial interrogation.

Yadav, 32, was arrested Sunday evening from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh and was sent by a court to three days’ police custody on Monday.

The accused was presented before the court after expiry of his three days police custody amidst tight security in a crowded courtroom.

The lawyers of Tis Hazari court, who are on indefinite strike protesting against the delay in tabling the amendment bill regarding enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts, told the magistrate that it has decided none of the lawyers will appear in court but assured that they will not interfere with legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, police told court the that they have recovered the case property related to matter and lodged a separate first information report against the accused for using fake driving licence. It added that a case of cheating and violating lawful orders had been lodged Tuesday against the cab booking company, Uber.
