Breaking: Senior counsel Sidharth Luthra accepts ASG appointment

Exclusive: Supreme Court senior advocate Sidharth Luthra has today accepted his appointment to become additional solicitor general (ASG).

Luthra told Legally India that he received his formal appointment letter today and immediately accepted.

At times “you’re called to serve”, he said, adding: “I’m happy to serve.”

He said that he did not have a problem giving up private practice and that he would only seek an exemption to act in a few personal matters or where he represented friends.

Luthra, who specialises in criminal law, white collar crime, extradition and technology, was called to the bar in 1991 and became senior advocate in 2007.

He graduated in law from the University of Delhi and completed an M Phil in criminology from the University of Cambridge.

He also organises the KK Luthra Memorial Moot Court Competition, a criminal law moot named after his late father, which is part of Legally India’s Mooting Premier League (MPL).

Luthra’s name was first floated for the ASG post in the middle of June.

Yesterday Delhi high court’s Rajiv Mehra was appointed as a new ASG, while the incumbent ASGs Mohan Parasaran, P P Malhotra, Mohan Jain, Indira Jaising, Harin P Raval and Gourab Banerjee have been reappointed, reported the Indian Express. AS Chandhioke has become a Supreme Court ASG moving from the Delhi high court.
