The Supreme Court bench comprising of justices Ranjan Gogoi, Arun Mishra, and Prafulla C Pant today told Raj Kumar Mehta, the counsel for Lalit Kumar Mishra, the former Additional Judge of the Orissa high court, who challenged his non-appointment as the permanent judge of the high court that there are no records of the proceedings of the Supreme Court collegium.

The petition filed by V Vasanthakumar, advocate from Puducherry, seeking the court’s directions to the Government to consider setting up a National Court of Appeal to relieve the Supreme Court of its case burden, got a new lease of life with the two-judge bench comprising the Chief Justice of India (CJI) TS Thakur and Justice UU Lalit, deciding to refer the matter to a five-judge constitution bench to hear from 4 April.

Following last year’s revival of the collegium system of judicial appointments by the Supreme Court’s constitution bench, which quashed the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) last year, the government is all set to revise the existing Memorandum of Procedure for appointment of judges of the Supreme Court and high courts, as suggested by the same bench.

A Supreme Court bench comprising of justices Anil R Dave and Adarsh Kumar Goel asked Bennet Castelino, an advocate and the petitioner-in-person, to approach the high court of Allahabad to order a CBI probe into the mysterious disappearance of Rahul Sachan. Sachan is a key prosecution witness in the Asaram Bapu case.

A petition pending since 2000, Ashok Kumar Jain v UOI (civil writ petition 546/2000) against the 79th Constitution Amendment Act, 1999 which had effectively extended constitutional scheduled caste (SC) and scheduled tribe (ST) reservations in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies until 2010 (and until 2020 after the 95th amendment), was revived by the Supreme Court’s five Judge constitution bench today at 2 pm in court No 2.

Senior advocate Kamini Jaiswal has filed a fresh writ petition in the Supreme Court through advocate Prashant Bhushan, seeking to institute a Special Investigation Team to probe the incidents of attacks on 15 and 17 February at Patiala House court and also issue suo motu contempt proceeding against three advocates, accused of interfering in the administration of justice and for willfully violating the orders of the Supreme Court dated 17 February.

The before the Constitution bench at court number 3 at 2 pm began on a serious note with the Attorney General, Mukul Rohatgi asking the bench whether it was at all required to copy thousands of pages of official correspondence at the chief minister’s office on various trivial matters, when what the petitioners want access to, is something else. The AG also claimed that the chief minister’s office in Itanagar is not sealed, and the petitioners have not yet made any attempt to claim access to the documents which they want.
