23-year miscarriage of justice ends with framed accused vindicated by SC but a 'living corpse'

Imprisoned for 23 years on the basis of faked police confessions, finally exonerated earlier this month by Supreme Court justices Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla and Justice UU Lalit, Nisar-ud-din Ahmad, and four others were released reported The Indian Express in a harrowing story that should be read in full and will probably end in one asking, is it too little too late?

The conviction and sentence was "completely unsustainable,” said the bench, with the Supreme Court advocate of several of those exonerated, Nitya Ramakrishnan, noting that their alleged "confession in police custody is the beginning and end of the case".

But for those wrongfully convicted and jailed that is perhaps only little consolation. Ahmad, who was arrested before his 20th birthday, is 43 now and said on his release:

I have clocked 8,150 days of the prime of my life inside the jail. For me, life is over. What you are seeing is a living corpse.
