Jindal Global Law School finished semifinalists and won other honours in the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law held in France last month, which is the penultimate moot of the third season of the Mooting Premier League (MPL).
Jindal also won the Gabrielle Marceau Award for the best complainant written submissions at this MPL Tier 4 international moot. Earning a total of 13 points from the WTO finals, Jindal moved from the 13th to 10th place in the MPL 3 Season Standings ahead of Campus Law Centre Delhi, GNLU Gandhinagar and RGNUL Patiala.
The Jindal team consisted of speakers Akkara Chummar and Aakriti Mittal along with their professor coach James J Nedumpara. Chummar said that the team had a great experience at the moot. “The quality of judging was unmatched. Most of the judges worked at the WTO Secretariat and some of them had even argued the cases that we were quoting. Hence, there was very little leeway for any mistakes in our arguments.”
MPL 3 Quicklinks:
Chummar said that the overall approach of the team was to understand their arguments and to stretch it to see if it withstands both logical and legal scrutiny. “This approach is different from most Indian moots where judges generally test your general knowledge of the law and ask about random concepts. Here, you have a chance to direct the judges to your arguments and hence you should ensure that your arguments are strong to withstand scrutiny.”
The Jindal team lost to the University of Ottawa, Canada in the semifinals. “All the teams from all the regions were placed on an equal footing. We were up against some European teams in the preliminary rounds. After being placed fourth in the prelims, we qualified to the quarters, but lost to Ottawa in the semis.”
During the minor final rounds (between the losing semifinalists for the 3rd place), Jindal negotiated a settlement with Harvard University, USA. “We did not argue the minor final rounds as we mutually settled the dispute with Harvard. Under the WTO procedure, if parties wish to settle the dispute, they have to submit mutually acceptable terms of settlement to the judges. We sat overnight and prepared the settlement terms with Harvard and the judges loved it. This was the first time that any team had done this and judges appreciated the out of the box thinking and recommended WTO internships for us.”
Chummar also appreciated the efforts of the team coach, Prof James Nedumpara. “He has been of great help for the team.” He also mentioned that his law school had been very supportive throughout. “This was the first time we participated in ELSA and this was also the first time we qualified for the international rounds of a moot. We were completely sponsored by our law school and the Centre for International Trade and Economic Laws, headed by our coach Prof Nedumpara.”
Jindal was the only Indian team to qualify for the final rounds of the moot this season, after they defeated National Taiwan University in the WTO Asian rounds in March.
This season of the Mooting Premier League will end with the Manfred Lachs Asia Pacific rounds to be held at Nalsar Hyderabad this weekend. NLSIU Bangalore leads the MPL with an unassailable lead of 88 points over NLU Jodhpur, while the last two years’ winner Nalsar Hyderabad languishes in third place this year.

Yes, in a year when NALSAR won Oxford Media and Vis Vienna and NLU Jodhpur won Stetson, this really might be one of the 'best international moot performance of an indian law school this year'
Ignorance.
