Private law colleges have risen the India Today annual law college rankings faster than their national law school counterparts, with Symbiosis Law School Pune, Amity Law School Delhi and Bharati Vidyapeeth New Law College Pune all rising in the rankings as against last year.
NLSIU Bangalore and Nalsar Hyderabad traded places at the top again, while NUJS has apparently boycotted the rankings again this year.
NLIU Bhopal stayed steady in fifth rank but was overtaken by Symbiosis Pune that jumped from tenth to seventh this year.
National magazines’ law school rankings have proven controversial and been heavily criticised in recent years by graduates and students as bearing a correlation to advertisement or other more opaque factors. And while India Today has outsourced the heavy lifting in its survey to Nielsen, there is little transparency as to how precisely the rankings are arrived at.
The rankings between national law schools also do not seem to have had any impact on the preference of future law students taking the Common Law Admissions Test (CLAT), which have remained fairly static in the last five years; NUJS is still firmly embedded as third in the rankings, while the absence of RMLNLU Lucknow, HNLU Raipur and Nuals Kochi from the India Today rankings, has still seen them ranking more highly in the preferences than RGNUL Patiala, for instance, which was ranked in 15th place this year, up from 18th last year.

Had my exam there once, the pigeons were shitting all over!
check this out--
NALSAR is actually being compared with NLSIU !? Thats a no-brainer. The rankings make it seem like its a Spain v Brazil final LOL
Symbi is at #4 ahead of GLC (at #17) !!!
Even Guru Gobind Singh IP University (whatever that is) outranks GLC !!!
GNLU outranks NLIU Jodhpur !? (I know dissection is bad but this is worse)
Aligarh is almost at par with NLIU Bhopal (Yes, we know Bhopal is the pits but surely not of the same grade as Aligarh)
Good thing NLU Delhi and NUJS decided to stay out of this.
Further, science helps score marks (which is why certain people who I know took it) and if you're planning to work at a firm, it doesnt matter whether you study physics or ... (what did you study, or did you study anything at all).
Waise in Spain v Brazil, which one are you suggesting is the underdog here?
Arrey baba, you are getting very angry...but it is not your fault they teach some hocus-focus at NLIU Jodhpur. It is the administration's fault. I am not the first and definitely not the last to wonder agape in amazement at how young minds from best families in India are swindled and dceived into studying Phy-Chem-Maths-Bio to get BSc in a "integrated law degree".
As to my example, you can be at peace that Nalsar is neither Spain nor Brazil. Maybe it is ... Paraguay at best.
At the outset, I must disclose that NLU’s B.Sc. stream graduates have been – to quote Nemo-who-can’t-spell – “swindled” into Harvard Law, UPSC top 100 rank, Supreme Court clerkship program, Clifford Chance (arguably the world’s biggest law firm), the Big 4, Amarchand (arguably India’s biggest law firm), etc. We NLU-ites will always “blame” our alma mater for these goodies.
About the B.Sc. and other streams at NLU
NLU Jodhpur offers 3 integrated degrees - B.A., LLB. (Hons.), B.B.A., LLB. (Hons.) and B.Sc., LLB. (Hons.). To offer such courses, any university will have to be recognized by the UGC and the BCI. Accordingly, and in compliance with the UGC's requirements, NLU-ites who opt for the B.Sc. course study science papers and the ones who opt for the B.B.A. course study management, accounting and quantitative papers. All NLU-ites, regardless of their chosen stream, must study the mandatory social science papers prescribed by the BCI for the integrated 5-year law course, which includes Economics, Sociology and Political Science - these courses are towards the award of the LL.B. component of the integrated degree. The students who opt for the B.A. course study additional papers on these three subjects, as well as papers on Philosophy and Psychology. Comment 5.1 Not from NLUJ or NALSAR has stated the reasons for opting for B.Sc. pretty well - B.Sc. students are often the overall batch toppers due to the high scoring nature of the science papers. Many B.Sc. stream students also opt for Honours in Intellectual Property law since they aim to become IP lawyers – such students must have an undergraduate science degree if they also wish to attempt the Patent Agent examination. The examination is important because IP lawyers cannot draft patents without clearing it. In other words, clearing the Patent Agent examination and undergraduate level knowledge of science are both necessary to draft patents, which are mostly drafted in India by engineers with a 3-year law degree. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT college education is meant to be fun - it also shapes your personality and defines your undergrad education. Therefore, if you do not like science, please don't opt for B.Sc. merely to be a patents lawyer or to score high marks. Opt for the stream you actually like because they ALL lead to an excellent education and – if it is your aim – well paying jobs. NLU-ites from the B.Sc. stream have been placed with the biggest and best firms in Delhi/Mumbai and London. Same goes for the B.A. stream, if you wonder whether B.A. is less advantageous to NLU's B.B.A. with corporate law honours combination. Students from the B.A. stream can also opt for corporate law honours and very much succeed in getting placed with the best employers or secure LLM admission to the top universities like Harvard and Oxford. At the end of the day, all that matters is your grade, extra-curriculars and personality, all of which are directly related to studying what you enjoy.
Arunava Mukherjee
Class of 2009
P.S. Dear Nemo, you will do well to avoid penning utter nonsense based on ignorance, especially when it tends to misguide others. Peace.
Dear Arunava Mukherjee Class of 2009 from NLIU Jodhpur
As someone commented below, it is really sad to see students fighting on internet sites to uphold the reputation of their respective colleges.
I fully share your pain of being a product from a university that tries to "set itself apart" by having a curriculum on law that could at best be termed nonsensical and at worst criminal fraud and cheating. And then having to defend this turd, which you have attempted in a weak way by quoting a few lines from here and there like a 1st or 2nd year project.
The BCI not being a very pro-active body on legal education it is anybody's guess what they believe to be a sufficient curriculum for law but you're only living in a delusion if you think that the expression "5-year integrated law degree" was ever intended to mean teaching of such non-allied subjects like Phy-Chem-Math-Biology in a undergraduate law degree.
Ironically enough the 5-yr degree was an experiment that started as a reaction to the age-old practice of people doing a B.A. or B.Sc or B.E. (or any other undergrad degree) and then moving on to a three year LL.B. The experiment was to teach students law from day 1 with some subjects from allied subjects like sociology (needed to appreciate jurisprudence and legal theory), history (needed to appreciate development of law) and economics (needed to appreciate effects / objectives of law). The reason they are called allied subjects (and also why is titled a humanities subject) is because they are complimentary.
On the other hand Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc. are in no way needed or essential for an understanding of law - beyond some niche areas like Intellectual Property law, and does not justify making it an institutionalized part of the curriculum. In the last 100 years (conservative estimate), there has been no respected university to implement such a plain foolish curriculum. You can choose to ask yourself why that is the case or accept the fact that there was some wisdom behind choosing to do so (Your call!). As for BBA, it is a sham degree and no self-respecting institution in the country other than the shady Chaudhuri family-run IIPM offer it as a main subject.
The scam is very apparent when you see that NLIU Jodhpur has chosen only to "teach" the un-regulated or non-regulated non-law degrees like Bsc and BBA (which have no standards or regulators). They dare not try to give a B.E. or B.Stat or MBBS since these are all regulated by AICTE / ISI / MCI which would immediately block such a haphazard move.
Once again, the commentator on this forum has put it very well when he says that "the NLU institutes at lower rankings [like NLIU Jodhpur] have accomplished whatever they have till now due to complete and absolute individual efforts of their students against their myopic and obtuse administration". Even a second-class magazine like India Today can see the writing on the wall when it ranks NLIU Jodhpur below Aligarh, ILS, etc.
My advice to prospective students is to give NLIU Jodhpur a miss...there is something strange when law universities start trying to branch out and offer BBA, Bsc degrees and teach you subjects for which you could go to Stephens or Fergusson. The recruitment is in pitiable shape and the student community is so immature like Mr Arunava Mukherjee of 2009 batch that they cannot even accept a shortcoming of the university without getting blindly loyal. Ask yourself whether 7-8 years from now you want to be like Arunava Mukherjee and spend all day writing silly posts to defend the choice of studying biology dissection in law school. That uis also the reason why the newer NLUs like GNLU Gandhinagar and HNLU Raipur are overtaking NLIU Jodhpur
Peace
I am only quoting India Today my friend, How does it matter whether it is NLU or NLIU or NLSIU.....a deception is still a deception. High time Bar Council of India investigated the curriculum.
Unfortunately in India a mindset exists that if anyone has been conned into going to a 3rd class university then instead of warning others to stay away he /she will do their level best to ensure more people succumb to the scam so that ranks of victim ensure.
I may also quote from comments of the highest and most renowned legal educator in the country from a BCI Education Committee report (available on internet) that "centres of excellence in law should set about developing syllabi to ensure as much of the time in class is devoted to study of law and legal theory and not frittered away in unconnected subjects which tend to be wholly redundant once the student becomes a lawyer". Clearly NLIU (or NLU) Jodhpur decided that it could look "cool" only by teaching students Physics and Biology and Chemistry because maybe they are facing problems teaching law (or maybe NLU or NLIU Jodhpur wants to develop pharmacists, nurses and laboratory assistants instead of lawyers which is why my advise to CLAT aspirants is to try and avoid going to NLIU Jodhpur. Hope they clarify.
It is evident that you haven't been able to grasp that the Physics and Biology papers are not substitute for law papers, but substitute for some BA papers. The course comprises of 60 papers of which 44 are law papers.
If it is still not clear, nobody can clarify any further. Or maybe your aim is to troll ...
What a joke. The methodology is so trashy that it defies use of stronger words.
Shame on journalists!
I dont understand how colleges can jump or lose 10 ranks in a year! what superlative thing happened in that one year!
India today is such a joke! these rankings should be banned in public interest. Innocent Janta who doesnt know much rely on this shit piece and it is dangerously harmful.
This reminds me the effect these lousy rankings have on public perception. When i got through NALSAR, I had an ignorant distant relative asking me "kya hua beta? Sybiosis mein admission nahi mila?". I just smiled to myself and said- Nahi uncle, Paper bahut tough tha is saal"
Have several stories of NLU students which are worst than the one you have quoted. I still hold that regard for NLU.
Are you jealous of ILS students? Did you loose a moot against them !! LoL
Their has been a complete lack of development of course structure and syllabi in these colleges. For example in NLIU Bhopal, the ranking say the academic input can be ranked at fifth place but if one looks at the seminar subjects offered to a fifth year in the aforementioned college, it will only encourage peals of laughter rather than legal professionalism. At some places there is a lack of proper resources or if resources are present, their utilization suffers due to lack of proper faculty. Many NLU students have no idea how to use manupatra..which is shameful considering the fees doled out in the name of infrastructure. The professionalism in such institutes is dead as they become stagnant cesspools lacking foresight and pragmatism. The way the top institutes like NLS, NALSAR or NUJS have progressed is because they have grasped the significance of constant re-invention. I am not maligning anyone but the NLU institutes at lower rankings have accomplished whatever they have till now due to complete and absolute individual efforts of their students against their myopic and obtuse administration who encourage nepotism, sub standard levels and compromise on integrity and honesty. At such times it is really sad to see students fighting on internet sites to uphold the reputation of their respective colleges
Infact, "Christ College" itself doesnt exists, because its Christ University now. And its law stream is "School of Law, Christ University" which is completely different from CCL.
Please people and new law entrants do not go with the India Today rankings, they are just to fool you. India Today have made their money, dont loose yours.
Infact Christ doesnt deserve to be on that list, worst faculty and management, ever seen. If they cant even place 1/3rd of the batch, they dont deserve to be in top 50 colleges, atleast.
now, I don't want to face the wrath of students saying that MPL rankings shouldn't be the measure of how great a college is doing. But when you look at NUJS placing its students in some local shit Banerjee and Chaterjee firms, you do realise what they are hiding up their sleeves. And yes, its nothing but false promises. Look at the placement records of colleges like NLIU and NLUJ, you'll get the idea that even if these colleges have two or three lesser jobs, they are definitely better than those Banerjee and Chaterjee law firms.
enough said, I believe NUJS has already had its days of glory and its time NLIu and NLUJ take the lead.
Looks like another frustoo (frustrated student / alumni from one of the lower / lesser known / ranked "NLUs". From the whining tone of the comment probably NLIU Bhopal (a.k.a. the Quota Law School or QLS)
So lets see what he is crying about,
"the seminar courses offered by NLIU are very relevant"
Really? like 200% more relevant than the seminar courses offered at NLS / NALSAR ? I saw the list of "seminar courses" offered at NLIU Bhopal and its a blot on the name of law schools. Mindless garbage taught by faculty who confess freely that they don't know a thing about the course. In real terms most of these "seminar courses" are "chillouts" as the Bhopalis call them - a subject with no classes and no teaching. Just copy an article from the internet and do a half-hearted presentation in an empty room.
"one can't deny the simple fact that colleges like QLS Bhopal and NLUJ have made a mark and are set to overtake NUJS."
QLS Bhopal was established couple of years before NUJS. Ordinarily you would expect it to be the #2 or #3 law school in the country. Instead it is a dismal #8 or #9 after NLS, NLU Delhi, NALSAR, NUJS, DU, GLC, ILS, NLU Jodhpur and even HNLU / GNLU. The Bhopali quota + the remote location far from any centre of learning and the resultant lack of intelligence has effectively killed what could have been an average law school.
"But when you look at NUJS placing its students in some local shit Banerjee and Chaterjee firms"
Thats tough luck for NUJS I guess. But when you don't have a job working for a Banerjee and Chaterjee firm is a good option. In the last 3 years students holding NLIU Bhopal law degrees have been forced to work as clerks in a PSU, are sitting for Group C state government jobs (essentially sub-inspector of excise) and are thronging the state Legislative Assembly building every afternoon begging legislators to be employed as Personal Assistants to MLAs (I know this because 1 of those students was expelled from the premises by the police). In Mumbai one NLIU Bhopal law graduate works as a typesetter in a printing press. So compared to this working in a Banerjee and Chaterjee firm is better.
The sad truth is that recruiters have stopped travelling to Bhopal for QLS placements. Whatever little recruitment happens is due to the personal connections of the students and the efforts their parents make.
The sad truth is that nobody prefers to put QLS Bhopal on their top 5 list of preferences during CLAT. Even down market schools like Symbi or ILS are preferred over QLS for admission. Almost every QLS Bhopal student is a 5 or 6 place reject.
The sad truth is that QLS Bhopal Students pool money to pay air fare of recruiters and that's how bad the recruitment scene at Bhopal is.
The sad truth is that QLS Bhopal attracts NIL good faculty. Most of the news items about good faculty is always between NLSIU, NUJS, NALSAR and NLU Delhi. Never QLS Bhopal.

Hilarious!!! With subjects like these I guess QLS Bhopal produces lot of "talents" except for lawyers
