The National Green Tribunal (NGT) stayed the use of paper posters in the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) elections today, four days after results were announced in the 11 September poll.

DU Law Centre – II first year student Nithin Chandran, who had filed the petition in the NGT for paperless campaigning in the DUSU elections, told Legally India that a bench of former justice UD Salvi and Ranjan Chatterjee admitted his petition today, ordering the stay.

Chandran said that even though the elections were now over, the victorious candidates were using printed posters to announce their victory and that the NGT bench had ordered that this should stop immediately.

He said that the NGT bench had asked him, during the hearing today, to cite examples of other countries and institutions where paperless elections are the norm. He said that he cited certain European countries and even the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Delhi as examples.

The NGT states in its order:

Respondent No. 5- DUSU is restrained from pasting pamphlets etc. on the walls in the DU Campus as well as on the public streets.

The next date of hearing in the case is 23 September.
