AZB & Partners senior associate Debashree Dutta will join Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas’ (SAM) Mumbai office as a partner, focusing on banking, Legally India has reliably learned.
Dutta began her career at ICICI Bank’s in-house team in 2007 after graduating from ILS Pune. She completed an MSc in law and finance from Oxford University’s Said Business School in 2010, after which she joined AZB’s finance teams.
SAM Mumbai managing partner Akshay Chudasama was not reachable for comment at the time of going to press.
We have reached out to AZB and Dutta for comment. UPDATE: AZB's Zia Mody commented in an email: "We wish Debashree all the very best. We were very happy to have her with us. We are sure she will shine in her new role."
Chudasama, who was a senior partner at J Sagar Associates (JSA) and a partner at AZB before joining SAM, had landed a coup in poaching AZB corporate partner Shuva Mandal late last year.
SAM’s Mumbai office was around 80 lawyers strong last month, with space enough to expand to 140 in its more than Rs 50 lakh rent Nariman Point office space.

Very smart and hard working! many of you would know that she is her batch topper and her notes are still used by student of ILS! A very famous name in the student fraternity must say!
'most nicest'
'one of the...person'
'student'
I suppose capital first letters would be indeed too much to hope for.
What surprises me is you sound like you have worked with her, so you are either a law student who has interened or a lawyer who cannot be bothered with drafting basic sentences correctly.
"She helped her uncle Jack off the horse" v. "she helped her uncle jack off the horse".
ILS is keeping up the traditions!
SAM seems to be benefitting from that?
Also SAM CAM non poach? May expire in May and maybe we will see later hires? SAM needs cap markets in mumbai.
It's possible that to augment new office, SAM is going all out to recruit while ignoring existing lawyers - both in terms of pay and position.
It's also possible that soon we see a reverse drain from SAM, when it's existing lawyers - who have been loyal for years start leaving.
And once these new hires realise the colour of grass from this side of fence, they may also leave.
Mother's money may help in poaching stars. But building a a team and retaining it, takes a lot more than money.
He won't pay an penny extra! [...]
Btw overheard at a party in Bangalore. A senior partner at CAM - we made a mistake!
Separately, interesting that Natashaa Shroff who has more experience that Rishi baba is still a Principal Associate and working hard!
The other got his own money, amount of talent, market standing, repute AND most importantly a strong set of VALUES.
It is only a matter of time before the scales tilt in favour of he who moves forward with values intact rather than waving wads of cash!
Don't think she will need any KCo referrals but could be vice versa though! Get some coffee dude and check your facts before reporting!
Does go a long way to prove her credibility - doesn't it!
if the team was so disappointed then shouldnt have hired a candidate like that.
if she is still being hired after all disappointments - then the people who are so disappointed are either irrelevant in the system or has no say in the system!
