Trilegal spin-off Phoenix Legal has added two associates in Delhi, vowing to significantly expand its practice there and in Mumbai with lateral hires.

The firm is hoping to hire a lateral partner for its Mumbai office and to double it in size to 10 lawyers by the end of the year.

Phoenix founding partner Abhishek Saxena said: "We are looking around for a couple of candidates. Although we'd be keen to get a partner, if it does not materialise we may want to get a very senior associate."

"It is about getting it right," he added.

Co-founding banking partner Sawant Singh is currently heading the Mumbai office and has been doing corporate work. The new recruit will focus entirely on the corporate field.

Saxena said that the firm wanted to build a full corporate practice there.

On Monday (1 June), Phoenix's Delhi office recruited corporate associate Divya Vig from Delhi-based practice A&M Law Offices and two weeks ago hired corporate associate Abhishek Bhalla from local aviation firm Rajinder Narain & Co.

This takes Delhi's size up to around 10 lawyers, including three founding partners.

Saxena said that within the year, the firm would hope to increase the headcount there to 15 lawyers.

Phoenix was started up late last year by three defecting Trilegal partners and Kochhar & Co corporate partner Manjula Chawla.
