Kochhar & Co Delhi partner Ricky Chopra has gone independent again, setting up Ricky Chopra - International Counsels in Gurgaon with immediate plans to expand with tie-ups in New York and Chandigarh, possibly followed by Mumbai.
Chopra specialies in corporate litigation and white collar crime but said that his firm would also handle general corporate and transactional work.
He is a 2001 graduate of Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre, having practised between 2001 and 2009 in his own firm, the Law Offices of Ricky Chopra, before joining Kochhar.
“I’ll be formally launching in another week or so,” Chopra said. “I was at Kochhar at a partner position for five years, before that I was on my own, I guess I decided to do that again because I enjoyed doing it more than a partnership role.
“Not that I didn’t enjoy that, but I think a man’s got to do what he’s born to do, and I thought the legal industry has moved quite a bit in the last five years and I have something to offer to the industry by opening another cutting edge law firm where I could introduce a lot of modern practices to our old traditional legal system.”
He said he wanted the firm to be very tech-savvy for clients and “easy and friendly” for colleagues and juniors who work with him.
“I’ve lived in New York for many years before I joined Kochhar and I had my own practice, I was a regular in New York and used to go to and fro. We have a lot of Indian clients who have need in New York,” said Chopra.
“Another plan is to open in Chandigarh and Mumbai, but I’m not thinking I’ll open in Bangalore, because Bangalore is yet not my stronghold area - I’m not a very known person in Bangalore, I’ve not visited Bangalore that much, but Bombay, Chandigarh, Gurgaon are my targets.”
He said that in the Gurgaon office in sector 51 there were already four lawyers, which would grow to around nine lawyers who would all be laterally hired in the coming weeks.
In New York, he would tie up with a partner who is already running his independent practice with his existing team, although he said he could not disclose any names yet. In Chandigarh too he would open up in an “arrangement” with another lawyer, while in Mumbai he was considering options.
