Juris Corp corporate partner Hoshedar Wadia and dispute resolution partner Anil Jarial have left the firm indefinitely and for a sabbatical respectively. Wadia had been a partner with the firm since 2008, while Jarial had joined as partner in 2010.
Juris Corp partner Detty Davis told Legally India on 25 March that while Wadia had stopped coming into the office a week previously, since he had flown to London to be with his wife, Jarial was not present in the office for around a month due to “personal reasons” but was still handling the firm’s matters.
Davis said at the time that neither Wadia nor Jarial had resigned from the firm but their plans for returning to office were indefinite. The names of both were listed in the firm’s profile at the time.
Wadia is now looking for an assignment in London and would join Juris Corp if he returns to India, while Jarial has taken a break and would rejoin Juris Corp in a few months, according to statements from the former partners given to legal website Bar & Bench. Jarial and Wadia’s names are not listed on Juris Corp’s website anymore. Legally India could not reach either partner for comment.
Wadia, a 2004 graduate of GLC Mumbai, started his career with Juris Corp and became a partner at the firm in 2008. He handled corporate commercial, private equity, structured products and OTC derivatives work at the firm.
Jarial had started his career with Mulla & Mulla in 2000, leaving the firm in 2007 to set up as a sole practitioner. In 2010, he joined Juris Corp as a dispute resolution and real estate partner in Mumbai.
In January this year Wadia’s sister Hufriz Wadia joined the firm as partner, while banking of counsel Fraser M Alexander left in February to join Majmudar & Partners.

"Have left the firm" is different from taking a sabbatical/break. Considering the nature of work that law firms do, a burnout is not uncommon. And no, I am not at JCorp.
@Kian: You need to oversee what gets published!!
Would be very interesting to know how the HR partner is appraised considering the fact that All of Juris Corp's initial partners and Of Counsel( 9 of them) save one, have left in a litttle over a year
Now with Suruchi gone and the only surviving non founding partner also on way out the firm is completely finished
With Both Hoshedar and Suruchi gone JCs derivative practice will probably also be discontinued since both of them ( particularly Hoshedar) were taking care of Derivative practice
Quoting BB:
A partner or two leaving in the space of a year may be normal attrition but 9 out of 10 leaving in over a year, especially when most of them have served between 7-10 years earlier with JC is something else. JC celebrated 10 years in 2010 without losing a single partner but now has lost 9 out of 10 original lot of partners/Of Counsels. It is as if the essence of Juris Corp has departed and what is left is merely a hollow shell!
@ Absolution - Please do not insult Mid-day. It still has some some standard.
@ Kian: I understand that you must have to outsource some work. But please check it before reporting. Please understand that the subjects of your articles are blue-clip law firms and reputed partners.
you meant blue-chip law firm?
I stand corrected - what I mean was "blue-chip law firms"...
The fact of departure of Hoshedar Wadia and Anil Jarial was common knowledge since March. Even JC's Detty Davis acknowledged that they had stopped coming to office since 25 March. It is mid May today. i.e a delay of over seven weeks So why the clumsy attempt by JC to hide the fact of their departure and 7 week delay of LI and BB in reporting it. Further there is a difference between a "sabbatical" and departure and the article body and the title seem to be at variance on this. Kian can you please clarify as to whether they have left JC or are on a "sabbatical"
For the last 2 or 3 partner departures, I believe, they sent out a press release without us asking for one, which is fairly unusual.
I don't think there's so much to this story necessarily. Two partners are taking some time off, possibly indefinitely. I think until either of them make a certain choice to return or join somewhere else, there's not much more to report...
Best wishes,
Kian
Dear Kian,
I disagree especially on the fair and transparent bit since apart from suppressing the news it also appaers to have inflated the no of partners and Lawyers merely to gain RSG rankings on basis of past glory as easily ascertainable by comparing its net profile with nos reported
However since JC appears to have reverted to a small firm in the last two years ( going by the departure of its key talented partners and seniors) I do agree that people moves in a JC like firm would be of much lesser interest to LI readers than they were a year ago
Dear Kian,
JC has also suppressed the joining of one Mr Prithviraj Bhagat as partner, since his name does not appear on the profile HHowever his detailed profile on Linked In shows him as a partner and also reveals that he is a fresh law graduate without much experience. This is why JC may want to suppress the fact.Further JC has also omitted the names of 2 Of Counsel S Dhavale and S BAya who were on the earlier profile but missing from the current one. It is understood that they have left but JC is also keeping silent on this. So much for being forthcoming and transparent on its people moves
Thanks for your comment and leads. However, I'm really wondering why a few people have such a huge grouse with JC.
I don't think a firm is under any obligation to publicly disclose the news of two of counsel leaving (nor partners for that matter). And I don't understand - how or why a firm would suppress that someone has joined?
And just because the website is not updated regularly enough does not mean there is something nefarious necessarily.
I understand JC has faced a lot of attrition lately, at all levels, but I am frankly stumped as to why there is such a flood of negative comments and animosity against the firm... Have they rubbed some people the wrong way?
Best wishes,
Kian
Judging by comments received they seem to have not just rubbed people the wrong way but rubbed them with rough emery paper so that most of them are raw and hurting
Looking at the type of comments Juris Corp seems to have antagonised all its former people esp due to its HR policies. I do not think the firm realises that some of the people who have left with a bad taste have joined its former and present Clients in senior positions and will look out for opportunities to "return the favour"
With due respect I feel that LI is trying to circumvent the issue and defending Juris Corp. I feel the it is LIs duty to uncover the truth and the recent episodes with Juris Corp ( inflating partners for RSG, having retrospective co founder partner, suppressing news of departure of key partners ) are certainly fertile materila since foreign potential clients of Indian Law Firms as well as potential recruits look to LI to give a fair and unbiased opinion.
I do agree that comments are critical of Juris HR but they seem to be partly correct since they have also praised the outgoing partner Mr Wadia as well as a former tax partner. This would not be the case if they were mere outpourings of disgruntled ex employees
Therefore I sincerely urge LI and you to report fairly and fearlessly as you have done in the past as and when more skeletons tumble out of the Juris Corp closet
Many thanks
It is pertinent to note that though Mr Bhagat's Linked In Profile shows him as a partnerof Juris Corp since Dec 2012, the firm has chosen not to publicise news of his joining despite publicising news of Ms Wadia joining after him. (...)
This may be because he has only completed his academics (LLM) in 2012 and LLb in 2010 and does not seem have the seniority for a partner of a mid size Law Firm ( though his Linked In Profile shows his expertise in several branches of Law)
Quoting SR:
I too had worked with both these bawas. Both of them were highly qualified, ( Hoshi CS and Solicitor ranker and Freddy LLM gold medallist and CA ranker along with BSc) Both had great personal and intellectual integrity and had the ability to tell off Jayesh when he did not make sense. In addition Freddy was a tax / numbers whiz and could analyse financial /tax implications of any deal which JC was doing . Their shoes will certainly be hard to fill and JC has lost its edge with their departures.
People walk in and out of law firms all the time, but there are hardly any law firms which disclose this. Management practises of most law firms are downright unprofessional, JC at least discloses partner departures/sabbaticals. I know of firms who have seen key personnel walk out, but it is kept a desperate secret.
Dear Cynical,
It is not so much the fact that partners and seniors are leaving, but the ill will which seems to have been generated by JC on their departure ( as can be ascertained from comments) Far more people leave AMSS, AZB, JSA, Trilegal etc; but one does not see this kind of bad blood between a firm and its former associates. Remember that there is no smoke without fire. Further your observation about JC promoting the organisation over the individual seems to be off in light of the next comment by one"Prabir' who says that JC is a one man army( Incidentally Prabir alsohappens to be thename of JC founders son). JC certainly is moving towards the one man show by simply dgetting rid of all the other talented partners and seniors over the last year or so thanks to its HR and appraisal policies and has suceeded brilliantly in this
Judging by the comments and spate of partners and seniors quitting it appears that the number of Believers in Juris Corp is fast dwindling
Readers of LI (including those working at Juris Corp) get far better and accurate news about Juris Corp from comments an articles than from within the firm itself, due to its policies.
Keep up the good work Kian and LI in publishing the truth and encouraging its readers in giving comments telling it like it is without any censorship
It appears as though the comments are driving the disclosures and news releases from Juris Corp ( rather like the cart before the horse). It happened with the news of departure of Wadia and Jarial and looks like happening for the news of current departure of Of Counsel Suruchi and Shruti. Reflects poorly on the PR of the firm
