Essar Power general counsel (GC) Sumant Nayak will be joining Desai & Diwanji as a partner in Mumbai.

He is expected to join private practice for the first time in at least 13 years later this month, having announced his departure from Essar around October.

He declined to comment when contacted.

Nayak had been at Essar Power since 2013. The Sambalpur University LLB holder, 1992-qualified company secretary, and 1997-Xavier Institute of Management MBA holder had previously worked as a lawyer at a number of companies.

From 2003 to 2005 he was country counsel and company secretary at construction company Ascendas in Chennai, followed by one year as head legal at GMR Energy in Bangalore, and five years between 2006 and 2011 at Delhi International Airport as head legal.

From 2011 to 2013, before joining Essar, he was chief legal officer - airports at the GMR Group, which operates the Delhi and other airports.
