Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas has continued rebuilding its competition team - ahead of the impending departure of competition head Nisha Kaur Uberoi, who is currently serving out her notice period - with the hire of Khaitan & Co principal associate Anshuman Sakle as a partner.
Sakle had worked with Khaitan & Co since graduating from Symbiosis law school in 2009, barring a four-month secondment with the competition group of A&L Goodbody in 2014.
In June, Cyril Amarchand had promoted Bharat Budholia to partner in competition law.
We have reached out to Cyril Amarchand managing partner Cyril Shroff.
A Khaitan spokesperson said that Sakle was someone who had grown in the firm and they only wished the very best for him.
Update: A Cyril Amarchand press release stated:
Anshuman specializes in competition law, and has advised clients on issues related to market practice and market structures. He regularly advises on compliance aspects related to the enforcement provisions of the Competition Act, 2002 including providing assistance in mock ‘dawn raids’. Further, Anshuman has been involved in the drafting and filing of leniency applications with the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
He has also advised several clients across various sectors ranging from pharmaceuticals, automotive components, media and entertainment, financial services, heavy machinery, civil aviation, chemicals and information technology on applicability of Indian merger control on transactions and filed numerous pre-merger notifications with the CCI.
Earlier this year, Anshuman was also a Resource Person (for Merger Control), with the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs...
Managing Partner Cyril Shroff commented on his appointment, saying, “We are delighted to have Anshuman on board with us, and will be aggressively expanding our competition law practice. His addition would add bench strength to service our clients in this growing area of law”
Anshuman Sakle, on his appointment said, “I am delighted to be joining Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and extremely excited about the opportunity to work with an excellent team"

"We welcome the new hires to CAM. They will fit into the culture of full subjugation and complete horozontal prostration before lord ganesh. This hire and the recent promotion are a step towards ensuring that CAM does not attain a domminant position in any geographic market with its competition team. CAM imbibes the spirit of the practice it wishes to practise"

No, the scene has changed my friend.
Sir, please correct this. This is the question of credibility and trust, if nothing else.
Also, please specify the type of cooperative banking institution you are referring to. Stats say that StCBs are doing fairly well these days. Majority DCCBs not so much.
#JustSaying
Now what about the extremely competent homegrown 8 Year old experienced PA3s from the 2008 batch who have not even been made Partner Designates - why are they still continuing. Its only matter of time before they take flight.
awesome bro..and definitely one of the fastest elevations from symbi at a top firm...
really well done...
Very demoralising to the young SAs and PAs at CAM. Even for the partners promoted over the last 5-6 years.
There was a time when a fresh PA from CAM would go to KCO / trilegal / JSagar as a partner. Now its just the opposite.
This is so patently a poor management strategy that I'd say good luck to CAM running this way. Anybody at CAM with even half a brain will release that it's much better to be somewhere else/anywhere else than to remain at CAM if they want to progress.
Cam competition is now run by Associate-Partners. Is Buddhulia reporting to Anshuman?
Anshuman has done great for himself, what is the point of this negativity? I can hardly think of any 2008 / 2007 partners who are rainmakers, let's get real.
All the babies of the world, CAM welcomes you.
Will that irk them, offcourse it will but does that mean that Anshuman deserves such vitriol for no fault of his own, absolutely not...
Anshuman works in a niche practice where there are a handfull of trully qualified practioners and he is smart, hardworking and humble...
There has to be have been a business case for CAM to hire him given their current vaccum and he seemed to have been in the right place at the right time in his career to get this jump..
Would this have been possible if CAM still had its erstwhile partners, maybe not.. but the fact is there was a void and Anshuman was chosen to fill it...
Lets stop being nasty, give credit where its due and wish him well..
Congrats Anshuman.. you have done us proud and wishing you all the best so that you can prove all the naysayers wrong...
1. [...]
2. Does the hire have experience comparable to Uberoi? Absolutely not
3. [...]
4. Will this demotivate the PAs? Totally
5. Was this a kneejerk reaction to Uberoi's move? Probably
6. Will this benefit CAM in the long run? Most probably not.
Comparisons to Uberoi when she was new to competition law are bad. Competition law itself was very new so she had the benefit of learning as the law matured. Now the uncertainties are less and its a lot harder for a newbie like anshuman to learn on the job.
Overall a blunder by CAM methinks. Certainly no justification for bringing in this kind of new hire.
How long is CAM keeping Uberoi?
Answer: Until the 2009 kids grow up;)
bro your rants maybe against the organization but if you were as smart as your name suggests...
you would suck it up.. take the fact that someone got a sweet deal in your stride and go back to putting yourself in a position where you could get such a deal..
accept and move on
Still Cyril, Zia, Haigreve have made their mark globally. So let them do their work and you focus on your work. Being a Cravath Associate, you should not waste your time on these things. Better to do some billable work.
. The deal volume for our firm was 927 Billion USD. That number speaks for itself
Post your brilliant post, I believe you have single-handedly ensured that the reputation of Cravath dips multiple points. With your writing style, errors in language and the beautiful use of 'sort' - I would advice you start applying to some of our tier 4/5 firms (and give them the pleasure of telling you to stay at Cravath).
Now go on and point out errors in this post!
