1. Only someone who lacks experience and/or brains will say that a General Counsel (or any In-house Counsel) cannot be a partner and vice versa. It really depends on the individual and what experiences s/he has gained. Many senior lawyers in Tier 1 and Tier 2 firms are pretty shoddy - forget the law or drafting or commercials, they make stupid statements and can't even talk/dress properly. Again, it all depends on the individual and what they have made of their experiences.
2. More importantly, a partner who is a "finder" or a "minder" does not have to draft his hours away. He can just get the associates and junior partners and the "grinders" to do the grunt work. The comments on this article only shows how little people/lawyers know about their own profession and how much they think they know! Grow up chaps.
Just to substantiate my credentials, I have worked both In-house and at Tier 1 firms- both in India and other jurisdictions.
Now unless you are the subject matter of this current article, and i shall make the assumption (I know I know assuming makes an ass out of you and me) that you are not the said protagonist of this story, i doubt you are qualified to authoritative say this gentleman's legal career as illustrated in this finely drafted press release makes him qualified to fill the void left by the certain top tier talent that has exited. Call me whatever, but i doubt the replacement of top quality talent from N schools by GC's was the future that this firm was looking at a year back.
If you want to deny their TTT status it is your funeral. But remember the first rule of TTT, if you don't know what it means, you are probably in one.
If you are moderately talented at writing and logic, and have received some good training and a few years of experience, drafting becomes something that you can either do or you can't, no?
Sure, maybe you need 30 years in private practice to become a drafting equivalent of Shakespeare, but don't 90% of corporate lawyers get by just fine with competent drafting skills?
The harder part in being a corporate lawyer is surely transaction management, client relationship skills (i.e. handholding) and legal knowledge, no?
I think private practitioners tend to diss in house counsels primarily because (a) a lot of the legwork for such in house counsels is in fact done by the private practitioners, and (b) the work hours of in house counsels are much more predictable :)
To say that one is incapable of something because he has not done it in the past. really don't understand the mindless opposition
Not to diss either, but honestly, very few partners draft - except to rework a clause here and there which inhouse people also do.

Hiring, Staff pyramid and BCG Consulting will leave CAM competition in the dust (AZB can try). We will be so far over the horizon, forget catching up, the others won't even see us.
Our aim is 85% of the market. Others can fight for scraps.
We will revamp the ops, HR and IT and most importantly, our legal departments. Delhi will become our shining beacon of hope, which even Mumbai will look up to.
Revenue and clientele will go through the roof.
The purple elephant will reign Supreme! Others, who were so far negative about CAM will watch in amazement as we zoom beyond the stratosphere. Mark the words of an experienced man.
