Exclusive: Crawford Bayley associate partner Krishna Venkat will join AZB & Partners in Mumbai from 1 June as a senior associate in the M&A and corporate practice.
Venkat completed his undergraduate in law from the University of Manchester in the UK and began his career at Crawford Bayley in 2005, specialising in M&A, restructurings and foreign investment and exchange-related work.
AZB Mumbai managing partner Zia Mody said that she was happy about Venkat’s joining.
Venkat declined to comment when contacted.
Crawford Bayley corporate and M&A partner Sanjay Buch said: “It’s a loss for the firm but we have to move on in life.”
He added that the firm’s associate partner designation would remain, which was intended as a period for lawyers to acclimatise themselves with the firm culture and remain for a longer time. “We are a 160-year-old law firm and there’s a constant lookout for good talent to be retained… The [associate partner] platform is offered for the young talent to prove themselves. If they’re capable and they fit in the culture of the firm, they can capitalise on the firm and the platform.”
In April Crawford Bayley promoted Renuka Shetty, who practices transactional and litigation work, to associate partner. Other firms with an associate partner designation include Economic Laws Practice (ELP) and Khaitan & Co.

And btw, if you think ignorance pertains to stupidity then I wonder what your level of intelligence will be !!
I dont think that is the case here. There could be a lot of factors (work quality, money, work environment etc) that might have contributed to the move. Either ways wish you all the best at AZB.
Sadly, in big firms there are partners who are not worth the designation and SA's, PA's etc who are more than worthy. Its all a question of who wields more power over the decision makers- the kind makers.
The only benefit which the firm will have is higher billing depending upon the designation.
Before a smart client your knowledge will get exposed, even if you are an "imported lawyer" or belong to "rich family" or is connected to the "equity partner" or your relative is an "influential person". Even the firm knows this, but is dragging it because of some considerations.
It is sad that, lawyers think like investment bankers and talk about "designations" and "deal size", when the efforts involved are the same, irrespective of the deal size.
Yes, your views are misconceived. In my 7 year experience of working on many deals (small and big), efforts vary wildly. In transactions, issues are sometimes unique, deadlines tight and clients demanding.
This guy started his career in 2005. There are plenty of 2005 grads in AZB (most of who are great lawyers) and none are partners. Obviously an outsider of the same batch would never have been made partner no matter what his previous designation.
Under the circumstances this guy venkat has certainly not taken any 'haircut' or loss of designation by moving to azb as SA. He has only gained as azb is most definitely a more prestigous firm than CB.
There was no merit in LI reporting this otherwise ordinary job shift. But I guess the folks at LI got dazzled by the associate partner BS and gave this guy some undeserved publicity.
What is the starting salary for Associates in Crawford Bayley?
