Clifford Chance India group partner and Amarchand Mangaldas alumnus Sumesh Sawhney has resigned to join Jones Day in London.
He is understood to be joining Jones Day as a partner in London.
Sawhney declined to comment when contacted by Legally India last week, but a Clifford Chance spokesperson confirmed his departure.
Sawhney was promoted to Clifford Chance’s partnership in 2010, as reported by Legally India at the time, having joined the firm in 2006 from Amarchand Mangaldas Delhi, where he was a partner. The 1992 Punjab University Chandigarh law graduate is dual qualified to practice in India and England & Wales.
Clifford Chance’s India head and Singapore managing partner Geraint Hughes said in an emailed statement: “We thank Sumesh for his contribution to the firm and wish him well in his future career.”
A Clifford Chance spokesperson said that Mark Poulton would continue heading the India Group’s corporate activities, working “closely with Rahul Guptan in Singapore and Neeraj Budhwani in Hong Kong, and with Parmeet Bahri, an associate who joined the London office from JSA in September”.
Over the last year, claimed the statement, Clifford Chance’s offices had “advised on over 115 transactions or disputes for Indian clients or for multinationals with interests in India”.

For Sumesh, he probably got a raw deal at CC. CC couldn't handle the in-fighting in India group, and lost people and plot. Even after being made up, Sumesh had little elbow room.
Looks like he will head India corporate desk at JD. Kian - can you confirm?
CC on the other hand is further losing its pulse on the India group.
Happy New Year, girls.
The editor of this website has done a great amount of disservice by letting these posts go unchecked - i have seen people's carefully crafted repuatations be unwisely commented on, people's personal lives being spoken about and baseless allegations being made...all under the guise of an anonymous post - if this webiste and the posts it allows to be posted here are a barometer of how the profession is to work in, then I would advise anyone with any sensitivity to stay away. Good bye.
