BCI is drafting regulations on foreign law firm entry

After a meeting between the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the law ministry on the subject of the entry of foreign law firms, as reported by the PTI over the weekend, law secretary PK Malhotra told Bar & Bench:

The BCI has agreed to prepare a draft regulation for consideration by the concerned parties. The draft will be circulated shortly for consideration by the concerned parties. This is a step forward and we are very happy with the development.

We have to watch the interest of the Indian legal community. It should be a balanced regulation without compromising the interest of the legal community then only we can provide some comfort to foreign lawyers.

A government response to the pending Supreme Court case against foreign law firms would be formulated after the regulations come out, said Malhotra.
